Just been Suspended

Just been Suspended on full pay for 2 weeks, because I gave a collouge a lift and her sister-in-law in the van, silly mistake I know but I'm not in the union, and unsure where I stand, already on a written warning for leaving the main staff door on the latch by mistake one afternoon.

Sorry but I would say its not looking good.

Non Royal Mail people in a Royal Mail vehicle means that you, they and the stuff inside were not correctly insured and you were therefore committing a driving offence. Hopefully your boss will be lenient but with a warning already I would prepare for the worst.

Not sure even if your colleague was okay especially if they were not on duty that day.

Even if you were in the Union, this would be a very difficult one for the rep deal with, however, hopefully someone on here can give you some good pointers and with a fair bit of luck you'll be okay.

I am sure you will be ok with the colleage. The member of public is a little tricky. :hmmmm

I would hope a short term ban from driving and a warning would be enough. Being a non union member is not going to help much either though.

Hopefully someone will come along with the same problem. :hmmmm

You can't pick up a member of the public in your van but you can load all the publics mail into your car :confused

Just plead ignorance and you thought you were doing a good deed there was no other intent.

gross misconduct could be issued, failing to secure the integrity of the mail is sackable, going off route, unauthorised people in the van, etc. even if you didnt have any mail in the van they could be pushing for dismissal on other factors. especially if they dont owe you any favours, and they want you out. my brother gave a colleague a lift to do an errand and they were both suspended for 8 weeks. a fantastic rep fought tooth and nail to save their jobs and it was a successful outcome but it was a very VERY close call. all the best for you, and i really do mean that, but i feel you are in a dark place at the moment mate. good luck.

You gave a workmate a lift and a member of the public in a VAN! Where did the extra person sit? in the back? wow! Best of luck, plead ignorance but wow!

Are you not allowed to give work-mates lifts then? I've had a few lifts at the end of my shift - no going off-route, or anything, just a since-you're-going-that-way scrounge. It happens lots at our place and nothing is ever said about it.

Technically no..in reality it's unlikely to be an issue but if you're involved in an RTA....and the "unauthorised passenger" is injured even though they are a colleague it could be big trouble for both of you.
