i am a postman in south london and im currently doing the knowledge of london to become a taxi driver in the city. doing this requires me to take verbal test with an examiner and these tests are usually weekday mornings. i was just wondering in order to get these days off if they do not coincide with my rest days would i be able to take them as unpaid leave. i will also need to be taking these days off initially every 56 days. can my manager deny me these days off???

If you can't get it as AL,then it would be very harsh if a manager didn't give it to you unpaid. You could possibly swap days off as well.
