Wouldnt it be a good idea for Royal Mail to do an advertising campaign in the run up to christmas urging customers who are sending christmas cards to put their house number and post code on the back.We were sending full trays back with house names that nobody has heard of,post codes that dont exist,house numbers that are nowhere near the actual number and even cards with just christian names on them!!!! any thoughts on this?

Whats really weird is when you get addresses multiple times that dont exist, remember having 2 or 3 for a number 26 on a road, a road that doesnt have a number 26... Probabaly all sent fom the same family I suppose who had the wrong address, but all killed off because its almost impossible to find out the proper address with just a first name. If it had a surname I'd probabaly take the time and go through looking for the same one on the road and knock and ask (did this for a couple), but first names forget it!

Yesm probabaly but it'd probabaly be ignored and costly. Its not as if post codes are new yet people sitll rarely use them on christmas cards

Yes i think it would be a great idea. I find a lot of xmas cards have simply gone away and if they got them returned they would know not to send one next year

Another poss money-making scam for RM - selling sticky labels to peeps that just contain house number and postcode so they can stick 'em on the backs of envelopes ...

The amount of cards I got on my frame over Xmas where people HAD used return address labels on the back... The cards were I assume read by the computerised sorters the wrong way around and came back to the senders!
Obviously I didn't deliver them back to the sender, they went back to outgoing mail, but I had dozens of them

I wrote mine in small writing and just the first line and postcode...

I think writing it would be fine.
My basic understanding, the computerised sorters pick up the phosphorous in the stamps and so know which way around to sort the mail, I guess all stickers must contain some phosphorous too which is why some are mis sorted using the return address sticker details

To be honest why would you want your Christmas cards back?
They are of no use to you.
It would be an unnecessary drain on the company returning them to sender.

Which would not be a smart business move by Royal Mail.

Although Royal Mail making little stickers is a good idea - you could even sell them with stamps... it's down to the customer to perform what is essentially a very simple task - reading and writing. For 11 months of the year most people use a computer or get the work experience kid to put stuff in the mail until it comes to Christmas and they have to start............writing............and using stamps................come on, it's not difficult! I have no sympathy for people who have 'friends' and obviously don't know where they live!

When you think about the number of cards we deliver that are correctly addressed, then the mistakes are probably a very very small percentage.
