Parcel delivery services were kept busy last week as online retailer Amazon recorded three million transactions on Monday December 5th. This represents a significant increase from 2.3 million sales on the same day last year.

The bestselling item from the internet commerce giant was the Kindle, an ebook reader retailing at £89.

Amazon predicted that this would be its busiest shopping day of the year as early as October and these recently released statistics have shown them to be correct. It forecasts increasingly busy days for online retailers in the run-up to Christmas as more people gain access to home broadband and smartphones.

Christopher North, managing director of the UK website, said: "This year, Cyber Monday saw the most items ever ordered in a single day with Kindle being the standout product."

Christmas web sales are expected to rise by 15 per cent this year and account for nearly £8 billion of UK spending over the festive period.
