No.
It is as simple as that.
It is as simple as that.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

. Making posties redundant so managers still have a job
. Still paid managers rate
How can this be efficient
![]()
. I don't want to see anyone out of work but the job should be filled by the correct grade, if your short on sorters MAKE P/T ers up to F/T..... Still cheaper than paying a manager to do a postmans job

. Down to the union in my opinion, they know about it and do nothing.

who says he wont do it again.......he does'nt, for maybe an hour or so then guess
what.Complain again and again.....Rep gets fed up asking manager to stop and
gives up. It has become the norm now that staff dont even bother complaining

Managers at our DO prep jobs, do deliveries. Even I don't like it, I have added a bit at the end of my duty and it is called "manager' spotting" on my way back. I bip at them when I spot one with a bag. I am very surprised no one has sent the dogs to them yet.

WHY ROYAL MAIL IS FAILING
2 People in this footage. 1 is sorting mail, the other is standing watching him.
They're discussing how Royal Mail can save money in their office.
Yet it's the bloke being paid to manage who is sorting the mail

Re: should managers be sorting mail???
If a manager is doing CWU grade work on a regular basis, your office is understaffed.
A manager's duty has to be justified. All of a manager's time should be spent doing CMA grade work. If a manager is regularly doing CWU grade work, he/she is probably neglecting their work and not effectively managing their section.
Does your manager make sure that everyone does their fair share of work in your section?
Does your manager make sure that all procedures including Safe Systems of Work are being followed?
Do you get regular team talks and training?
Are your workmates allowed to pick and choose what work they do?
Has an unofficial 'supervisor' emerged to do what the manager is failing to do?
Is your manager in control of their section or does his/her staff lounge around chatting, reading newspapers, looking at the internet while the manager does most of their work?
RMG will not face the fact that a lot of their managers are not suitable. New Labour patronised the working class and thought that the working class were all the same and you could redistribute wealth by making anyone a manager in the public sector. Promotional exams were abolished and cronyism ruled. Wages for workers were kept low because we were sold the line that if you wanted success, you could get it 'X factor' style, regardless of how thick you are. The result was it cut off opportunity for talented individuals with no connections.
RMG does need to overhaul its management. We don't need privatisation to do this, we need to bring in promotional exams, aptitude testing and take the power to promote staff away from unit managers.

Agree with most said here except the last bit.
Yes , we do need to overhaul management.
Agree we don't need privatisation
Do not agrre that promotional exams are necessary. These sort of exams prove alomost nothing. You can pass an exam ; but still be absolutely useless at the job. You have to look for the character as well as the skill set of the individual.
Targetted selection in the interview process can help with this.
The underlying problems are;
Too many Managers (and I use that term loosely) do not actually manage. They tidy up.
Too many Managers ; Prep, deliver , IPS etc. OPG jobs. They do this to mask the shortfall in staff and to try and protect their bonus.
Too many Managers have no experience of Managing in this environment. It is often a conflict driven place. Full of angst, bitterness , selfishness. How do you manage this culture?
Too many Posties take advantage of the 'system' (I'll finish early coz the Manager will turn a blind eye). 'I've done my round , why should I do more?'
Too many Managers are 'scared' to stand up. They will not admit failure ; even though that failure is cause by a lack of resource. They fear the sack or demotion. A very difficult environment to work in.
Too many Posties say that 'XYZ' are easy rounds that can be done by Midday!!!. Sends a great message!!! Screws the guys that do the job properly!. I go back to the 'selfish' word.
That's enough for today.
I could cheerfully rip RM Management apart for their practices.Maybe will save that for another day

Re: should managers be sorting mail???
Please explain what "targetted selection in the interview process" is.
I would love to see the public sector provide opportunities for talented individuals who don't have connections and/or resources to go to University. If promotion is not based on merit, what criteria do you use?
I don't think it should be seniority.
Seniority is essentially the same argument that nationalists use and it doesn't take into account capability. Promotional exams and aptitude tests shouldn't be the only tools used to assess applicants but if a candidate does not have the comprehension skills to understand the Health and Safety at Work Act, they shouldn't be a manager.

Re: should managers be sorting mail???
i dont know how or why but this thread has turned into something totally different .managers are only as good as their managers who are only as good as the targets given or set, lets face it what is a good manager when was the last time you seen one its not a problem that is just royal mails ,but saying that you wont get one at royal mail because they are not allowed to exist, there are to many limitations in place to allow good management to develope,on its own what you know about a job is not enough, seniority is not enough a university degree is not enough being a company man is not enough being speedy gonzalez is not enough ambition is not enough yet thats what they look for in a manager they look for the wrong things, thats why there are so many w**nk**s not doin the job they are well paid for
