absolutely astounding decision

Post by shimmyrule »

Lad today taken in for stage one interview..........hes been here 3 years, never had a day off....he puts in for 3 days off........6 months ago, for an event..its denied.....and he goes off sick the 6 month later on the days he wanted off........produces a self certificate after 6 days off....and today is charged with using the sick absense fraudulently....basically the manager says even tho you have a certificate, and was handed in to the office on time, its not good enough.
They phoned him at home and asked him to come into work for interview when off, he said he wasnt well enough......and they are considering giving him a 0ne or two year suspended dismissal...............on the managers belief that he was at a concert on the days he was off..and the area rep says just take the punishment.... :arrrghhh

No proof,just an aasumption.

That's because they don't need proof..just an assumption....it should be reasonable though.
From a neutral point of view, given the circumstances...do you think it was?

yes lol, but theres a system in place, and nowadays, right or wrong, posties use the system, just like managers do, for me, its like 14 free days off..and i would never have said that years ago....surely tho, they cant assume he was unwell, if so, we are all doomed?

Begs the question: Should you bother asking if it's a bit dodgy? Might as well just pull a sickie! :hmmmm

What does surprise me is people that phone in Sick on a Saturday (and trip their sickness/attendance) and then turn up for work on Monday! Surely they might as well take the next 5 days as well? :hmmmm

No employee will be dismissed on grounds of unsatisfactory attendance if Royal Mail's standards of attendance are consistently achieved. However, those minimum standards are not intended to have the status of an entitlement. Employees will need to demonstrate - by meeting the customer requirements on notification and certification of absence - that the sick absence was necessary. Deliberate abuse of these provisions will constitute misconduct and may result in disciplinary action.

managers also deliberately abuse the attendance procedure, putting people on a stage when there are mitigating circumstances, knowing full well there is no right of appeal. they should be disiplined for it, but it doesnt happen.

unless he was stupid enough to put photos on facebook which i have seen, all absence is considered to be genuine. If it triggers a warning hen take it like a man if not keep your mouth shut and stick to your story. Rm managers are not doctors but they are robotic applyers of the sick absence policy which is agreed by the cwu.

I must be a bit old fashioned, because i tend to think that if you're not unwell then you should always come into your work! That way the genuine cases of absence would hopefully not be as harshly treated!

I know it's wrong to post this, but rule of thumb (so i hear) is to see the leave spread for when you want off,if it's full and the screws at your place are arses, then pull a sickie without asking for it off.

PS:Shimmy,6 months passed ffs, either the screws have a good memory, someone grassed or the opg talked too much.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

How quaint.
But this is the modern Royal Mail. Fook 'em, and take your two weeks sickie, that's what I say.

and the area rep says just take the punishment. nice rep you got there.
or is it he cannot be bothered.it seems to me that a lot of reps have given up with there staff if
they have no intrest in fighting cases for members even if the odds are stacked against a member.

our union is in a mess, but if the reps cannot attempt to back staff when problems arise staff will
lose even more confidence in our union, and theres not a lot left anyway.

Actually. I'd say the bit's I've highlighted in red, are evidence that he WASN'T at the Concert. How could he be there to answer his Home phone, if he's at a Concert? :hmmmm :d'oh!
Especially as there was a 6 Month gap, between the leave request, and his badly timed illness. Not that any of us have any control over when we're ill. :hmmmm

Nothing quaint about it DH,why on earth would anyone think they are entitled to sick leave when there's nothing wrong with them? Apart from giving your colleagues extra work to do,it's just downright dishonest!
