Dear Colleague,
Ken McKenzie Award for Lifelong Learning 2011
The following motion was carried at Annual Conference 2010:
“This Conference instructs the NEC to put in place an Annual Award to be called the ‘Ken McKenzie Award for Lifelong Learning’. This will be presented every year to a ULR (Union Learning Representative) or group of ULR’s who have made a significant contribution to lifelong Learning within the CWU. The award will be presented at either the CWU Annual Conference or the CWU ULR Conference.”
Sadly, Ken died in 2009 after a short battle with cancer. He was a Lead ULR and a CWU stalwart for the Edinburgh, Dundee and Borders Branch and as one of our first ULRs he helped to establish the Regional Learning and Education Committee in Scotland. His innovative use of newsletters and the web was instrumental in creating a strong network of ULRs in Scotland, and not just in the CWU. Ken was also well regarded in the wider labour movement and the STUC for the work he did in developing networks of ULR’s in the Tayside area. He is sadly missed by his comrades in Scotland and this is a fitting tribute to a good trade union activist who had a strong commitment to lifelong learning.
Last year Sally Joyner from Shropshire and Mid Wales Branch received the inaugural award and we received a high number of nominations of a very high quality. I now have great pleasure in inviting applications from Branches for the 2011 Annual Ken McKenzie award for lifelong learning.
The award will be made in recognition of exceptional achievements and contributions to lifelong learning by a CWU ULR or a group of CWU ULRs.
Nominations can be made by Branches, Regional Learning Committees or Regional Committees by completing the attached nomination form.

The closing date for nominations will be Friday 7th October 2011.
The presentation of the award will be made at the Annual CWU ULR Event on 2nd and 3rd November 2011 in Cardiff.
