The rest week con

Having been on rest weeks for many years now and losing 1 day annual leave for every annual leave week I am on I approached a manager and asked him why this happens as having been told before but never quite understanding it was told that the managers union got involved and now this con as he called it does not happen to them but our union seem to let management get away with this and come up with any rubbish to cover themselves and management.Does this happen in other offices.The con to me is we are on a 5 day week but it seems to me that the rest week is still classed as a 6 day week even though the hours that rest week/day work are the same.

I'm not toally sure what you are asking here. You work a six day week with one week off in six and want to know why you get less weeks of leave than someone with a rotating day off? Is that correct or are you getting at something else? If you are on a six day week you are obviously going to need to use six days of leave to get a full week off rather than five for someone on a rotating day off, hence you will get fewer full weeks of leave per year.

No con - if you are on a 5 day week when your working you do 39/40 hours and when you are on holiday you get 39/40 hours pay.

Under the old scheme you worked 6 days which worked out as 43 hours IIRC - and you got paid for the 43 hours - when you were off you got paid 43 hours.

Your are still getting a week off just like the old system but whether you are working or not 1 of those days you don't get paid for unless you work it as overtime.

I think i can explain it for the hard of understanding.

every 6-day week worked "banks" a day for the rotate week off.

now if you book a weeks holiday you may think "ill book five as im only being paid for five"
which seems fair exept that when your rotate week comes round you would have to be a day short! as
nothing was banked by you during your holiday week.

So you dont lose these days! they they support your rotate week ie you could have 3 weeks off in a row and still have a full rotate week as if you had worked all five weeks
