Just wondering is the procedures correct I have been doing the job 2months and I asked my line manager to put in over time and they questioned it and rejected it this has happened twice to me now and i am starting to hate it because i feel i am working over my time for nothing also i catch the bus to my walk and i have to told to do lapsing which takes 20 mins a Driver covered it and it took him the same amount of time.And my final question what would happen I went sick would i be terminated from my 6 month contract My lower back started killing and i wanted go to my local GP for some stronger painkillers but i am worried that i will loose my job and i dont wanna make an appointment with my GP id rather suffer with the pain can someone advice me thanks

ive benn a postie for 2 weeks now and overtime hasnt been a problem im on a 20 hour contract and for the last 2 weeks ive done 37 to 38 hours and it hasnt been a problem with my line manager

Cheers for the replies Iv done 12 diffrent walks i started in a diffrent area when i 1st started and overtime there wasnt a problem but this area i am doing when i put overtime in its like getting blood from a stone and some days i just feel like saying Sod this!

Members will come on and give you loads of helpful advice like cutting off and standing up for yourself and the grievance procedure which is all very valid but at the end of the day...you're a temp and as a temp you're in a far more fragile position than most of those giving the advice.
The best advice i can give you is make sure you're in the union,speak to your rep and your colleagues and try to fight this as a group...but put your health first,covering pain with medication is not a long term solution.

thanks fish tank yeah i do understand that iv told my line manager ALL this week i am getting pain in my lower back so i tried throwing a couple of packets out which one was a littlewoods catalogue so informed him. so i was placing my bags on my drivers york and the bag i take out on my back i put on my frame so its ready to go as i got back the packets i thrown out my manager was forcing them into bag so questioned him and asked why and he said you will be okay dont worry i dont get it at all sometimes

Go and see the DOM prior to going out and explain you don't think you'll finish, you're happy to work over but only if they'll pay the OT.................if they say no OT then ask which part of the walk they'd like you to leave as you won't get it done........I'm betting they'll say, after a brief argument mind you, ok, we'll pay you OT.....the problem might be that you're not informing them you may go over before you go out, just a hunch.

Re: your back pain, check your bag weights, ask your DOM what you should be carrying, I think it's 16kg for your first bag and 11kg thereafter, if they are over ask your DOM what to do, not confrontationally but as if you're asking for help, normally we get into conflict because our attitude is wrong, I'm sure most of us would agree on this.

And for both instances make sure you have a witness with you, stay calm and pleasant at all times....that's my best advice :)

I am on a 3 month contract and have never been paid for going over my time. I involved the union at a very early stage and had a meeting about it with the DOM as well. Although I was told I should get paid I never was. Involving the union did help things to improve in the office which is where a lot of the problems were such as walking in to an empty frame, no D2Ds prepped and taking out my own bags. I still walk in to an empty frame on some days and even when I mention it to managers they promise to pay me but I never get the money. D2Ds have only been prepped on a few days and bags are not always taken out for me.

It is very demorialising for me to not get paid for the hours I put in. I do the delivers at a reasonable speed as well. It leaves me with no choice but to hand my notice in very soon but hanging on for a couple of weeks as I need the money :-( The job is certainly not what I expected and hoped for.

that is shockingly bad treatment, there is no excuse for a part timer to walk into an empty frame,, what contract are you on

You are not following correct procedure then!

Always give your DOM open questions like:-

I'm not going to complete, what should I leave in the fitting?

etc etc

I am on a 25 hour contract. Most of the trouble I have had was written about in a previous topic that I added which is below

It is an absolute zero cut off policy at my place. I even asked the DOM, the union manager and my line manager if I was allowed to cut off and they all would not answer the question straight. Basically they said that if I walk in to an empty frame again I should find them and a possiblity could be taking out less mail. It seemed to me that was only in extreme circumstances such as when I was delivering until 5:45 one night when I am supposed to be part time. When my frame is empty the line manager will say I will give you extra pay but never does.

I have given up on it all to be honest. I am just trying to stick it out a couple of extra weeks and then I will leave and find something else. We can just scrape by on my wife's wages so that will have to do in the short term.

Even though I work over my time almost every day I still get pestered for lapsing and overtime, especially when a new line manager is on cover. All I want to do is go in do my job and finish on time :-( I have been put on one of the longest walks so I have got no chance of ever working to my hours even if everything goes smoothly. I know once I stay there longer the pressure will increase on me to do lapsing and overtime and I cannot physically do it. I also have to get back to look after my young child while my wife is working. On a heavy day (which seems to be most days just recently) it takes my 4.5 hours to deliver all the letters.

Well this is just bare faced lies from the management in that office.

I even asked the DOM, the union manager and my line manager if I was allowed to cut off and they all would not answer the question straight.

That is shocking from the rep. Have you tried contacting more senior above him? The answer is yes, if you follow correct procedure. If you're planning to leave anyway, give it a try. What have you got to lose? Chances are, they'll leave you alone if you do this just once. I've found it is usually not worth the hassle for them.

I agree with Harry , you are just going out and doing unpaid overtime without arguing your case, they will walk all over you. DONT be bullied into taking it out, ask your rep to get involved ( i know some reps are poor) contact the area rep if needed .

That's easy to say ebbzie and it's good advice but...the guy is a temp.
In an ideal world that wouldn't matter but it's not an ideal world.
He needs the help and support of his colleagues and the union before he paints a target on his back.
Where some of these so-called "colleagues" are hiding is a good question though.
