some advice, some of my colleagues wanted to inform manager they were not going to complete but he was in a meeting with somebody and nobody had a clue where he was.
the phg had already left the office as had the deputy manager on duties so nobody was around.
the guys decided to go out on delivery to try and get as much done as possible rather than just sitting in office and informed me of there duty concerns
when the manager returned i informed him of there problems and that they might not finish and said they asked him to call them to confirm
on returning to office with mail at the end of there delivery time the manager gave them a letter to attend a fact finding meeting as he said they had not followed procedure,even though they probably saved him an extra hours break-off :
any views on this please.

They should go to the fact finding meeting, and they should take their area rep.
They followed the procedure as far as they could they passed a message on to the manager who was unavailable, and they informed the manager on their return to the office of the mail they had left.

as far as i can see if anyones at fault it's your manager.
Why was he the deputy manager and the phg all unavailable at the same time?
If all these people are unavailable who are staff suposed to see?
Did he recieve the message from your colleagues? (i know you told him)
Why didn't he go out to see them on delivery when he recieved the message, if he had concerns about work returning to the office?

It's not written in stone wall that you HAVE to inform a manager before going out, they just like you to do this because it makes it easier for them. You might go out on delivery expecting to complete and then something happens which means you cant and you didn't know before you left. It's a scare tactic, they can't make you phone in either because you don't HAVE to use your own phone. The manager is trying to scare the guy into not cutting off again.

Trust me take a rep in because he can't do naff all about it.

I can't believe the crap people have to go through just for wanting to finish on time.

When i worked in a distribution centre years ago order picking - we were expected to pick 1200 items per 8hr shift, to meet daily deadlines - if for what ever reason we didn't complete the quota come the end of shift - the supervisor would come around and politely ask if we wanted to work over, a simple YES or NO was required, no bullying tactics were deployed or psychological abuse to make you complete - just a polite question.

It's pretty simple, next time they wait for someone who can make a decision.

Managers can't have it both ways.
