My NEC/PEC Votes

Post by lovejoy »

Hi All

Haven't posted for a very long time! I often scout the site for opinions and views because as always it remains a good barometer for that sort of thing.

Firstly in line with another topic in this section I have to declare an interest.....I am good friends with Tony Bouch.

Moving on from that I just wanted to give RMC members a lowdown of where my personal votes will be going in the forthcoming NEC/PEC elections.

1. Mark Baulch - A top man. He has led disputes both locally, divisionally and nationally. The sort of guy you want with you in the trenches. I know from experience that Mark is not afraid to get out and meet members - not something that can be said for all NEC/PEC members.

2. Tony Bouch - I have worked with Tony recently and his talents, efforts and constant focus on members has impressed me. In 2009 The Plymouth and East Cornwall Branch took local action alongside London, Bristol et al. This was no mean feat and certainly not in line with the history of that branch. It is fair to say that alongside others, Tony has changed the face of his branch forever. Now he deserves the change to bring that to a national level.

3. Kye Dudd - Official wise this Union is in danger of dying on its feet. We constantly say the right thing about bringing through new representatives but this is rarely reflected in senior CWU positions. Kye offers a different angle to the debate - the view of the U30s members. A huge % of our membership. Like Tony and Mark, Kye led from the front during the 09 dispute. This shows that he has the credentials needed to make the tough calls.

4. Noel McClean - Noel is an asset to the CWU and in my view could easily hold a National Officers role. He is a thinker but like the other 3 can bring steel and leadership if it is needed. I have spent a lot of time with Noel over the years (actually I remember people accusing me of being him on here!!) and he would be the first person that I would chose to go into a negotiation with me on any issue!

My list is short but I believe we need a real shake up.

Anyhow I will try to come back and post more regularly because I do miss the banter. I still get PMs asking questions etc on the Union / RM. Always happy to receive them.

Keep smiling

Thanks lovejoy. Good to get inside info on candidates. Branch recommendations and the CV's sent with ballot papers don't tell the full story.

I always make my own choice then compare against branch recommendations, usually end up very similar but not exact.

Billy is urging us to read what all the candidates have to say and cast our vote accordingly.

We are diverse in our views as shown by the posts on this site and hopefully the incoming PEC will reflect the whole range of views held by Postal CWU members.

Was that not the same Noel Mclean that was one of the main negotiators for 2010 BTA? :d'oh!

Yes, he was involved, I imagine as the official substitute to the outdoor sec that's why he was involved.

However that is by no means the sole basis on which mbrs should choose to vote or not to vote for him.

I'll take his overall record for the last 11 years and form my judgement on that.

Given how spread the negotiations were for BT agreement there aren't many PEC members that did not get involved in the talks at some level / for for some function. Also the PEC voted as a whole to recommend the agreement. It would be unfair and misleading to point the finger of blame at any individual if you are still unhappy with the deal.

Oh i am still very unhappy with "the deal" :evil/mad
Would i be right in thinking that he did a lot more of the negotiations than most on the PEC?
I hadn't forgoten about the other members of the PEC i will under no circumstances be voteing to re-elect anyone who was a member of the PEC at the time.

No you wouldn't be right. There were Delivery, Mail Centre, Pay, General, Network, HR strands to the negotiations. Most if not all contained PEC members.

Okay, care to enlighten us as to who negotiated what?
Would be intrest to know who negotiated delivery part of the agreement.
We really should be provided with this information as well as who voted for what in order to make an informed choice at these and all union elections. It would be far more revealing than the platiudes that candidates write for themselfs.
I mean our union officials are in theory supposed to be accountable to we the members are they not.

I don't know who went where, only that the majority we involved. I am not on the PEC.

As a member you could always email your questions to the PEC members initialsurname@cwu.org address!

I agree with you that all Union officials should be accountable. That is one of the reasons I support Tony Bouch so much because his whole ethos is around that!

I know your not a member of the PEC was under the impression that you are a London Divisional rep.

Well i remmember reading the letters section of Voice after the 2007 dipute, when a member ask who on the PEC voted to accept the 2007 agreement so they would know not to elect them again. The responce was to refuse the information, and say that they should look at the election addresses at the time. Not your or Tony's fault i know. Maybe i should e-mail individuals on the PEC to ask them directly, to be hounest i won't bother i will just assume that anyone who was there at the time was in favour.

Well you know Tony and i don't and he may well have many laudable qualities. Your assertion that his whole ethos is based around opens and accountability seems on the face of it to be true based on his hounest responces to quetions posed on here.

I simply will not be voting for anyone who supported BTA at any level of the union, at best i don't trust their judgement.

I am not angry about BTA, i feel betrayed! big diffrence. That may sound melodramatic, but i did not go on strike to "save the union" but to save my terms and conditions.

There has to be something wrong when the people who's job it is to decide whether an agreement is any good, and should be recomended to the membership, are the people involved in making the agreement :hmmmm it's something that needs to be addressed.

Local reps were not involved in making the agreement, so perhaps it should be left to them and them alone to make recommendations? The role of the PEC then to decide if RML have been take as far as possible and therefore what's on offer goes to the membership? My branch had a meeting of all the local IR reps and it was the local reps that chose what the branch recommendation would be.

Perhaps do away with recommendations? Explain the offer and leave mbrs to make up their mind.

What choice did the PEC have?
There was no plan b.
It was placed before the PEC as a "fait accompli". :cuppa
