Temporary contract

Hi all i have my first day of induction tomorrow, then start my training the day after. Will i get paid this week or do i do a week in hand? I am on a 30 hour week mon _ sat on a 3 month contract. What are my chances of being kept on? Been unemployed for nearly two years now so i cant wait to get stuck in!

feel for you re: being unemployed for that long :( you will get paid for your first week etc. havent heard of anyone not getting their contract renewed

A week in hand? What is this the 1800's? You get paid for the hours you work it's not that bad at RM - yet.

If you want to help your case with being kept on try to do extra delivery work if you are offered it. You wont be until you are up to speed so maybe after a month a manager might ask if you can do a bit extra today. If you are flexible you might be kept on over another guy who isn't. There are big changes to delivery being introduced in many offices (bike delivery to van delivery) so you might only be needed for a short while so don't build your hopes up. You might even be put on rolling temp contracts.

Yes you work one week lying on so you will be paid on your second friday and every friday after that unless its a bank holiday weekend we get paid on a thursday of that week

Thanks for the replies hoping to get some o/t too as i have 4 kids and mrs! Mrs works 12 hour shifts in a hospital but my mum gonna help with the childcare so hopefully i can get some o/t

Being honest i have never worked in another company that you didnt have to work a week or month before you get paid. RM is an exception on that front!

i would look around this forum and get upto speed on managers tricks before offering to do shedloads of overtime and not getting paid for it. I dont want to seem argumentitive but statements like 'you get paid for the hours you work' seem to against the majority of experiences people talk about here! Most people are struggling to get paid especially new people

Congrats on getting a 30 hour contract. They're not that common these days. OT is less likely during the summer as the mail is so light, unless your office is understaffed or badly organised.

Keep your head down and your nose clean for the first few months. Concentrate on not making mistakes, particularly with specials. recordeds and P739's. Cock a few of those up and they probably won't renew your contract. It's a good job for the wedge

EDIT - George, in the post above, makes a very good point about OT for new starters. It's quite easy to get conned. Lino says 'yeah, I've put you down for an hour' etc, it never comes. Just my experience, but it seems to be the chummiest managers who end up doing you over the most?

been on for 6 months mate its a good job took me about 2 weeks to learn the job after that you will breeze it, ignore the negative people on here, yes it is a physical job, but its not rocket science like they make it out to be most of them have been in the job 20 odd years and don't know any different, most of them would crumble if they had to work past 4pm in any other work place they have had it too easy too long

I think its better to be informed and know what your doing so you dont get messed around. I lost 12 hours OT my first couple of weeks for not knowing the system. Before i knew it my lino had moved on and there was nothing i could do! anyway good luck hope you get a good office!

It depends on the area and perhaps your DOM. We had one DOM who get rid of a lot of contract people. Was asked by our rep how he was going to cover the duties they were leaving behind. His answer: 'we'll take on more short term contract people'.

sorry bud but you've obviously not changed jobs since the 1800's. just about every job out there requires you to work a week/month in hand, in fact, royal fail is the only company i know that pays straight off.........and yes, royal fail is "that bad".
