industrial action

Post by silly suffolk »

went to a union meeting, was told about industrial action if compulsary redunduncie comes along. i said the union would do very well to win a ballot for i/a as a lot of the membership especially dly staff percieve the cwu as part of the problem. although i would vote for i/a, was i right in my assesment?

I wouldn't bet on it, and what i think of the union has evolved to a more negative view than it used to be, with good reason!

I think a reluctance to vote for IA would be based on the higher number of p/t staff who may not be able to afford to strike, and the fact we are entering the worst recession anyone has ever seen.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I wonder how many of the new rolling contract PT are members of union and would get a vote.
Also how many would support a strike if actioned

i dont think you would get a yes vote for industrial action now as most d/o would not be affected as we can not keep staff the turn over in our office since we bought park and loop in has been high and it allso looks like we will have to get up to 120 hours put back in to the office.allso a lot of the members feel like the cwu has sold the d/o down the river on the last deal? i would vote yes though just because it could happen to you one day :hmmmm

an overtime ban, work to rule and remove any good will would have a great effect, so many cant afford to loose too much finacially, i would support IA
but think a different approach to all out strikes could have just as a good effect and keep public support

in 2009 the IA was sold on the basis of "vote yes even if you cross the picket line" as its about getting RM back to the table.

When management want to change a lot of things in our contracts all in one go, they provoke a strike. This forces the Union to discuss the changes and puts pressure on the Union to make a deal. We usually end up having to accept an agreement that worsens our terms and conditions.

The latest news is that management want to bring in a new business plan. They have to come to us. They tried to provoke us with the colleague shares but we just laughed at them and told them to stick it up their arse.

The colleague share provocation has backfired on them. Now, the Union will not entertain the idea of including any bonus schemes (performance related or otherwise) in any future pay deal. All monies will go into basic pay.

While we are waiting, the Union needs to defend existing agreements. We need to set up a central squad of grievance experts and legal advisors to help members who are suffering from breaches of agreed policies and escalate to tribunal whenever we have a chance of winning. This will put pressure on management to come up with a business plan that concentrates more on bringing in revenue than cutting costs.

Very difficult to disagree with you there Minister. Certainly would be a good idea to have a pool of experts on call.

Why?
What exactly do we gain by striking? I could write a book about what we lose, every time we strike, but please, do enlighten me, what good has striking done for the membership?
I'll work to rule, no problem, but ask me to lose more money hand-over-fist, and it's a NO/NO from me.

Yeah, that and the fact that the CWU hasn't won an industrial dispute since Adam were a lad, despite the overwhelming support it's chosen to spurn. :evil/mad

I'm glad I'm out of the lot of it now tbh. Don't feel the posties have the support of the union for basic things, but feel the need for IA. Just don't think a lot of those high up in the union don't have a clue about what's happening at grass roots level. Anyhoo as I said, glad I'm out of RM and CWU :D
