i deliver in a village with another postie,he drags the job out,hes really slow and overweight,i dont run round i go steady were both on the same hours,i finish before him everyday,the point is i have ot every day ,and this fellow worker and manager expect me to help him finish his duty,why should i,if i work over my time you should not be expected to help somebody else.

They can ask you to help out if you finish before your time, but for no other reason. If your co worker is incapable of completing his delivery on time a couple of questions need to be addressed.
1. Do others complete the same duty without too much problem?
2. Does the duty need to be revised to make it achievable?

We have a similair situation in our office.. a co worker of mine is near retirement age and on a 600+ delivery point rural. He works over his time everyday to clear his round but our manager refuses to pay him OT saying he is too slow.
I've taken issue with the manager over this as I don't think he can make this decision... If RM say the old fella is fit for delivery then I think either his round needs to be timed/revised and that the manager has no right to refuse the OT.
I've suggested to my co worker that he should cut off if not able to deliver on time, but, like many of us rural delivery guys, we feel a loyalty to those often friends/family we deliver too.
I hate the idea of cutting off but it often seems like the only weapon we have against some of these managers.

Gundog, have you suggested that your old fella asks his customers what they would prefer he does.....work a few hrs a week for free so everyone gets their mail, or if RM refuse to adjust his round ( and refuse to get mail delivered on time ), should he cut off? If they are as friendly as the rurals I've delivered to, I think they'd be appalled he's being taken advantage of ( & I doubt they'd say "Sod you pal, you'll retire soon, I want my mail NOW, so hurry up!" ). Maybe he knows what they'd say without asking, but he's kidding himself cos he won't ask, but he shouldn't let the DOM continue to take him for a ride. Other than that, I'd say keep pushing to get his round timed, or even try to find out if he'd be up for early retirement ( sorry, it's a horrible thing to say, but I understand why he doesn't want to cut off, but if he won't, he needs something to stop the manager being a prick ).

I'm confused.
Are you getting O/T to help him?....if that's the case then...if you don't want it don't do it.
Are you helping him inside your contracted hours?...if that's the case..you are only being asked to work the hours you are paid for.

Why?

Easy to to say if you work in an MC and are not the last link in a very long chain.

I suggested my mate not to do OT if he won't get paid for it.. misguided as our loyalties migh be.

I will only extend if I'm going to be paid for it, and a lot of the time our OT is caused by late lorries.. even asked the manager if he can book our OT against MC.

"Divide and Conquer" springs to mind as there have been been extremely heated arguements and a few fisty cuffs between MC drivers and us boys out in the sticks who nobody gives a flying FCUK about.. it's their budget versus ours and it stinks!!!

That is exactly the sentiment I have, but for him to get his OT he needs to fight for it ( which is a bloody disgrace, but that's another thread ), and as you said, his choice of weapons are limited, all I was suggesting was what choices he has & that he needs to make a choice asap, otherwise the manager will just keep on taking liberties.

interesting responce everybody,if i helped out i would get paid ,but i allready go over my time most days,i have a young family etc .so when i finish the last thing i want to do is help somebody else,so now will just get the bus back to the office when finished.

As harsh as it sounds my answer is no. RF are trying it on all ways at the moment. End of financial year. Big push for their bonuses. Where are ours? Play them at their own game, but make sure you do it within the the rules. Give them no grounds for getting rid of you, but by playing it by the book you can stand your ground without any come back.

The same with mail why is everything done in a hurry if people want there mail at the same time each day why don't they have a PO.Box they can then pick it up at there leisure (Poo then we would be out of a job damm thats to sensible)
Parting note Just do the job as Royal Mail spec and within the Law do your normal hours (i think i have said this before) go home have a nice bit of Leisure time whatver you like yo do.
