Has anyone ever been to see Mr Archer the ATOS Occupational Physician? What's he like?

no not him but have seen a lot of the doctors though.most of them are ok the real problem is what they put in there reports to you office because they never seem to listen to what was put in the reports. but good luck and dont worry about it

I've seen 2 Doctors so far and they were both nice. The first one told ME I wasn't fit for work, the second agreed so I'm wondering whether they're looking at IHR for me now?

I found him to be very helpful. I went with my area rep which is something i would recommend.

ive only been on the phone with one of the ato doctors, i go back to work this tuesday (Hernia op) i've been off since the 23rd of december i think i have to do light duties for over a month

It matters not.... Personally I'd require any thing written about me in this interview? to be shown to me before I left. If the 'doctor' did seem a bit of a bas'ard then I'd strike up a conversation about The Hippocratic Oath which is an oath taken by doctors swearing to practice medicine ethically. I point out the last word ETHICALLY. If after reading what the 'doctor' had written I felt that he/she wasn't being fair or objective in their assessment I'd point out my concerns. If after that they weren't suitably allayed then I'd ask the 'doctor' for details of his/her regulatory body i.e. The GMC (General Medical Council) and make it plain and in no uncertain terms that I would make an official complaint under his/her 'fitness to practice'.

Unfortunately it appears to me theres a HUGE pressure on these doctors to get a result for the company that sent them the patient which is obviously contrary to what might be best for the patient

The last 2 I've seen were really nice but I can't remember their names. Dunno if I've seen this one before because he's a Mr and not a Dr by title. The first one I saw seemed very anti royal mail and that was when I hadn't even had a diagnosis. The second one agreed I wasn't fit for work and wanted me to be re-referred once I'd had my MRI scan results. I'm feeling worse now than I did then but I've got another neurologist appointment next month so I dunno whether they'll just ask me to be referred again after I've found out whether I'll need surgery or not.

If his title is Mr., not Dr.. Then he isn't a Doctor. More likley, he's an Occupational Therapist, or Nurse Practitoner. Be very careful. They aren't as well trained as a real Doctor. But just to make sure it wasn't a mistake on the letter. I strongly suggest that you insist on seeing evidence of him being a real Doctor (obviously, don't word it like that).

If he can't provide the proof either at the consultation, or afterwards. And you have any concerns about his conclusions, or report. Then demand a second opinion, from a qualified Doctor.

Oh dear. I've got an appointment with a ATOS doctor but it's in a town 40 miles away from where I live and work. ( a semi-rural area, this is the nearest MC and they dont come out to us )

Not only that but it's at midday. That means I wont get back to the DO before scheduled finish time, so it's either OT (fat chance!!) or a later start. They have to give me time off to attend but they'll never wear giving time off to the rep too.

So, apart from checking the doctor's credentials, is there anything else I need to be aware of?

He's a consultant, hence the Mr, not Dr. Bad innit really that you work really hard to further yourself and then you don't get a posh title to use.

He was lovely btw. Wants me referred again once I've seen the neurologist in 4 weeks time so we'll know whether I'm gonna be like this for a while yet or whether surgery will help.

That's what I'm gonna insist on too, when I go. The reports after the 2 phone "interviews" I had bear little resemblance to what was actually said.

The nurses I've spoken to have always read back to me what they've written and they send me a copy.
