staff abusing DDA
we have a couple of staff in our mail center who are diabetic and they have been to management with a doctors note saying they must do perminant nights, now im all for DDA when people are genuinely ill but these 2 arent as its type 2 which is lifestyle diabetes (eating s**t and sitting on your arse) and surly nights isnt the best shift for a dibetic, and its seems it doesnt afect them at weekends when they go playing sports and drink all day after shift. it seems they just want the money. anybody else experianced this at there mail center?

Re: staff abusing DDA
If they are covered by dda...they are covered by dda.
It's certainly not my job to question whether they deserve to be...i'm just a humble postman...not a health professional or a Royal Mail manager.
I find it's best in these situations to focus on your own job..not other peoples...and welcome to RMC.

you need to try harder. if you'd done better at school, you might have become a doctor and been able to make a professional diagnosis, but as you didn't live with it. welcome to RMC

FFS its hard enough trying to get Royal Fail to accept the Equality Act without our `own` having a go as well.

Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

We have a postie who has diabeties and has it bad,and he's on days obviously.
Do certain people take the piss with DDA,of course they do,it's human nature.
How much is night allowance btw?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: staff abusing DDA
I'm by no means an expert on Diabeties, so I don't know which shift would be best. But surely if the Managers have agreed to them being on Nights, there's been an assessment by ATOS, hasn't there?
As for the Chocolate Bars. I do know (because I have some Colleagues with Diabeties) that they carry them, to bring their sugar levels back up. Perhaps that's what you've been seeing.

Re: staff abusing DDA
Why - or is it an Urban Myth - I think it is as there are only 2 conditions specifically not covered by the DDA act (Now Equality Act 2010)demon wrote:type 2 is not coverd by the dda act as dwp will tell
also in the "Guidance on matters to be taken into account in determining questions relating to the definition of disability" document http://www.equalityhumanrights.com/uplo ... bility.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it specifically mentions that diabetes wether controlled by diet or medication can be considered (page 13)Conditions that are specifically excluded
Some conditions are specifically excluded from being covered by the disability definition, such as a tendency to set fires or addictions to non–prescribed substances

Re: staff abusing DDA
Whether type 2 is covered by the Equality Act would depend on the case.
Type 1 is always covered, type 2 might be (and usually is)
Yes type 2 can be down to lifestyle, but it can also be hereditary, and asthmatics are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.
Some people can control their type 2 through diet and lifestyle, others need medication.
Here in the West Coast of Scotland the incidence of type 2 diabetes is very high among the BME community. (Possibly diet related. Possibly not)
Type 2 diabetes will probably become type 1 at some point. The complications associated with type 1 are also associated with type 2.
On a unit level if you have a colleague with type 2 diabetes it is best just to refer to it as diabetes because it is unlikely your DOM will understand the difference.

Re: staff abusing DDA
The bottom line is we're posties, not doctors or managers.
If someone is abusing the DDA/Equality Act or not....it is feck all to do with us.
Their medical condition is certainly nothing to do with us but sticking your nose in where it isn't wanted will probably result in the conduct code.
