Tiny terrier stops mail deliveries to street

A 6-inch-tall Yorkshire Terrier called Peggy has halted deliveries to a cul-de-sac in Northampton following allegations of repeated attacks on postal workers.

For the past six weeks, a concerned Royal Mail has suspended all deliveries to Dorset Gardens in Kingsthorpe where the miniature canine resides, meaning residents have to travel elsewhere to pick up their post.

Nottingham Borough Council has confirmed that since receiving complaints from Royal Mail and fearful neighbours of the nuisance dog it has threatened its owners with legal action.

It is claimed by residents and postmen that feisty Peggy, who belongs to the Joyce family, is aggressive and uncontrollable.

But 'The Daily Telegraph' has quoted owner Margaret Joyce as insisting that the dog is harmless.

She said: "It's absolutely ridiculous that they are refusing to deliver mail to any of us. Peggy is very good-natured and loved by everyone. She spends her days sleeping and playing with the children. It's such a fuss over a small dog. She does bark if someone comes to the front door but her bark is much bigger than her bite."

An unnamed disgruntled resident also told the newspaper: "It is a vicious little thing and I have seen it going for the postman. I don't have a car and it costs £30 to get the post delivered somewhere else."

A Northampton Borough Council housing officer told Yahoo! News earlier today that the Joyce family was given a week's notice to re-house the dog.

However, as Peggy has not yet been removed, the family now faces being evicted from the property.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers in Dorset Gardens. We want to resume deliveries as soon as our people can enter the close without being bitten by a dog."
