Sackings

Was talking to a non RM friend and in conversation it came up that I've seen more sackings in the last 6 months than I've seen in all of the last say 6 years. Now I'm trying to work out if thats because the new DOM loves sacking people OR there is a general covert RM plan to do this? Sacking people is hugely cheaper than EVR etc and then the replacements come in on crappy fixed term contracts etc a complete Win/Win for RM.

You could understand if the sacking where mainly newish people but on the whole its not its the old hands... last fella had 24 years, the one before that was nearly 15 the current 'on notice' bloke is about 10 etc. most of the reasons are trivial, not so long ago they would have been a (stern) warning.

So, has anyone else seen a rise in sackings in their offices?

there was 3 in rapid sucession at my office early this year all had done around 20 years or more

Its an unbelievable firm to work for if im honest. Most other companies would love to have employees dedicated enough to work for them for over 20 years but RM see them as a nuisance and want to get rid. Its all about money including replacing them with 20 hour part time workers. Its such a basic thing but you've got to do the job the way they want it to cover your back in any problems that arise. Common sense has been sucked out all managers and even us nowadays are best not to use it.

we cant keep staff in our office they seem to leave wonder why . but would think it is cheaper to sack some one then pay evr to them watch your back

We just had a postman sacked in ours for having a fight with another postie, he had done 15yrs , the other postie who did not get the sack only done 2yrs, also the one that got sacked is the same one that has been in the news regarding the dog bite
where RM refused to deliver to the road,

In my experience it does seem that RM have an agenda to try and get as many full time contract posties off the books by hook or by crook.
The only problem with having this philosophy though is, who do they expect to do the ips sorting, and prep 2nd walks etc? Those that are on less than 30hr contracts just don't have the time. As is being seen though, RM offer part time contracts that don't seem to exceed 24hrs but then expect those same people to maybe do 16hrs of overtime which in essence is a 40hr contract, but isn't full time so aren't paying out the same rate as those that are on full-time 40hr a week contracts, so are saving money, and at the same time diminishing full time contracts which is their end goal in making RM a part-time organisation.

Lots of people sacked at our place for commenting about work-related matters on internet forums. Absolutely shocking.

3 night shift men (all 30 years +) sacked last week for being drunk on duty.
It does happen more at this time of year, but in the past they would have been sent home, or at the most suspended for 3 days.
One had recently turned down a £56k VR offer.
Be careful out there.

how can they prove they was drunk enough to be sacked ? was they breathalised ?

Did they have bottle in their hand or was it from the daytime drinking session?

But, seriously if they are operating any kind of machinery, and I include forklifts etc, then they shouldn't be anywhere near the workplace if they are intoxicated. It is really a H&S issue which I think RM have finally woke up to!
