we're going through a revision and resign at our office,
and while most staff are consulted as to what duty they want in order of seniority,
some staff have been given walks ahead of more senior staff (including 2 PT staff who have 1 maybe 2 years service),
this has seriousley put some noses out of joint,
one member of staff has been denied his night duty as he is deemed to be not fast enough on the machines even though he is 2nd most senior in the office, and he was assigned a walk, rather than be allowed to choose !
can management ignore length of service ?
any advice would be appreciated.

About time too. RM's had automation for 40+ years now, so It's about time the old CWU dinosaur's rule of seniority was discarded when there's some extra skill involved.one member of staff has been denied his night duty as he is deemed to be not fast enough on the machines even though he is 2nd most senior in the office, and he was assigned a walk, rather than be allowed to choose !
Workers from outside RM would be probably be astounded to realise this practice still exists, although why someone should be "allowed the choice" when he can't do the job, is nonsensical.

There is an interview process for these jobs,seniority does not come into it.

I understand your point and for the most part, agree with it, but i feel sorry for the person in question, he isn't (due to age etc) any more capable of doing a delivery, the manager knows this, but because the old fella has been intimidated into not claiming extended in the past (he regularly went well beyond his due finish time) she wants him back on the walk, theres no consideration for the guys welfare, he didn't even have to run the machines himself, he could have been the assist to the lads on the machines, which (in my opinion), he is more than capable of doing to the standard required.Tman wrote:About time too. wss in our office was done on seniority, which made the interview process a farce.
