UNION ADVICE PLEASE

Post by ldsposti »

Hi all would like some advice from any union rep, is it possible to put in a grievance/bullying or harassment on behalf of the whole office, any serious advice would be welcome.

NO. Everyone who has a grievance must put in a letter individually. There is nothing to stop someone from drafting a letter on a computer and printing out x amount of copies. They can then be signed by each person.
If the whole office puts in one grievance then that is all it is, One grievance but if the whole office puts one in each then the area manager has a major problem.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Make sure the union rep is not involved in organising this or at least has some wiggle room.

Can you give any more details?

The grievance procedure works best for clear cut single issues like recovering pay protection. Going past stage 1 requires courage and a lot of people will not have the bottle to go to the stage 2 interview with their line manager's manager. Therefore, the best tactic is for the bravest person to launch a grievance on their own and take it as far as is necessary to get a satisfactory result. When this is achieved, everyone else can launch a volley of the same grievances.

The main principle in drafting a grievance is to keep it as precise and unambiguous as possible.

Stick to one point per grievance.

Try to use the minimum amount of words necessary to get your point across.

Politely decline the offer of a meeting and state that, as your grievance is straight forward, you don't feel it would warrant the time away from your duty. However, always give the inviter the opportunity to write to you if they need you to clarify anything.

If you have to go to a meeting, just stick to your wording of the grievance. The manager will try to create grey areas of interpretation so don't be drawn into talking about anything apart from your grievance.

That is not what happened in one of our satellite offices, they collectively put in a disagreement about our DOM and to their credit the area manager and area rep came down and had an hour long chat with whole office in an open meeting.
