Impending dismissal,what would you do?

Post by Danelectro »

What would you do and what do you think will be the outcome of the following:

Union unit rep with 29 years service.

Two blots on copy book
1) Currently serving 2 year probation after being judged to have wilfully delayed the mail. This was after going into half an hours overtime and still had two bundles to go and had phoned office countless times during the previous hour to say that couldnt complete delivery, still no answer so left the bundles in pouch box overnight and informed manager the next morning.

2)Couple of weeks ago, pouching off undeliverable mail, took out a bundle and put on top of pouch box as pouch bag wouldnt fit into the adjacent post box, continued to put pouch bag into post box then member of public asked for directions, gave member of public the directions but forgot about the bundle on top of pouch box and went home.Bundle handed to another postie who took it back to office where manager found out.The rep has been suspended since then and has now got meeting with the ASM who does the sackings.

Div rep says,oh dosnt look good!

Area rep says,oh dosnt look good and you could lose pension contributions if you get sack so maybe resigning is an option.
(we later found out that you only lose pension contribution if you have stolen mail or gross miss conduct etc)

Any comments appreciated.

1 Think very carefully about resigning as this would have a big impact regarding unemployment benefits ect

2 I believe RM are very robust in sacking people who are full timers regardless if case is fairly proven or not.

3 I dont believe you lose pension contrubutions for "wilful delay" even for a proven case of stealing mail I belive you only lose RM's pension contrubutions

I wish senior reps would get their facts right.. On NO account if you are sacked or otherwise leave on your own accord you lose any of your pension rights...I honestly dont know where some people (who are meant to be in the know ) get their information from...

Nope, no pensions can be wrecked but as for future prospects with the royal mail, lets just say they look very very bleak. Would start looking for alternative employment asap! Few years ago maybe they would get off with a warning, now all RM want to do is get rid of as many FT staff as possible, seems in this case they have more than enough ammo unfortunately.
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

 Was the mail that was left on top of box endorsed as undeliverable? Is so that could be a wee point in his favour, and be put down to a genuine mistake. but it doesn't look good. but as a rep of long standing, the Union should be going all out to support this man--

So this is what you've told me:

A senior, (implied fully trained), employee serving probation for a serious breach of the rules, has left mail unattended on the street and gone home.

Based on the sparse information you've provded, what possible outcome, other than dismissal, would be appropriate?

As you say the information is sparse but i think you are being a little harsh.
There is no theft,no insinuation of corrupt practices...no dishonesty but still an employee of almost 30 years service deserves dismissal for two genuine errors of judgement....i lose more and more hope for this company as every day passes.

I know of a part timer, left his bag full of mail over garden fence while delivering from bundle. When he got back his bag had been stolen, no mail ever recovered. Kept his job. Later refused to deliver mail brought in on missort run cos there was too much, shouting and swearing at dom on shop floor. Dom suspended him 2 days with pay then came back delivering as normal and he is not even in CWU. Surely with a blue chip company of RM`s size, with procedures to follow this cant be right when a rep is getting sacked and this man doesnt....there is no equality or fairness.

We should all be unhappy when anyone gets the sack (stealing excepted, no mitigation over that ) ...Everyone is one 'mistake' away from the sack...

I agree. If it was a manager that did this they would go off on a training course and I'm not joking either.
29 years that's a huge amount of time, it seems we are all one mistake away from the sack.
Is it like this in every office?
No I'm not being paranoid, they really are out to get me.
