part timers treat like 2nd class crap

Royal mail is destroying the morale of long time part time workers that want to move into full time. Theres a lot of unfairness going on with in its ranks regarding management and also union reps. Apprentices brought in 2009 xmas and offered full time or part time contracts, Royal mail has long time served part time workers that are part time due to looking after unwell childern or elderly parents or college, Why where these part time workers not approached for full time contracts as i know a few that where available includng myselve that has spent 10 years at royal mail. Complaints made to union regarding apprentices been made upto full time, union did sweet f a about it. Now these apprentices which some dont see out there apprenticeship as i know of one who i have been chatting to are carted into other parts of royal mail already made upto full time are allowed to put in for duty repicks having only worked there a few years after quitting there apprenticehships, This means they are senior to the part time worker straight away should a duty come up due to to there full time position which they have got due to royal mail offering them full time hours on an apprenticeship course which they quit in due course, Then when the duty comes up and they put in for it the part timer doesnt stand a chance due to there hours of contract. Also full time workers are allowed to move up the ladder with vacany repicks while the part time worker who has a lot more years on some of these full time workers has to just sit there while they ie move from a box collection job to a 600 duty with extra allowances on or move onto a night shift duty which can have sometimes 10 hours scheduled attendance on it. Part time workers are not allowed to put in for repcik vacancys as i have spotted it in thick black writing on vacancy repick notices. Discrimination or what? Due to the way royal mail and the cwu is treating myselve and other long term part time workers i am deciding it is time to move on as personally i cant stand working within royal mail anymore and having to put up with it. Lucky enough for me i have found another job and am glad to leave my royal mail working life behind and forget about the place its been a nightmare the last few years working there and lead me down the road to depression to the way it made me feel. To all you long part time workers that feel that you are in the same position as i was in i would seek further advice or take it further outside of royal mail and the cwu. As what is going on is horrendous and degrading

Agreed andrewcup. Sadly, you don't stand a chance of being made full time at present. I'm hopeful that when the 75-25 split kicks in, then I may stand a chance of becoming full time. You could always become a boss.

For many pts, the only option of full time is on wsm.
No full time contracts in our office since 2006.

When I started working for RM in 1994 part timers were a minority,you were given whats called a part time/full time contract,then if you were ok you were made full time.I work in a small rural office out in the sticks and we have a few part timers,and yes there treated like s**t which is out of order.The full timers also don't want to be throwing walks off before they go out,so we all get screwed in the end.But on a positive note a few lads in the area have been made full time,so don't give up keep mithering for full time.At the end of the day they can't have a workforce made up entirely of part time workers,so something has to give soon.And if they ever offer me a buy down,they can stick it up there brown eye.JL.

Its good that you have found another job. I am still a part timer with around 11 years service and still no prospect of full time. I recently transfered from a small office to a bigger one as there might be a slim chance of being full time at some point in the near future.

One of two reasons why i moved was the office was closer to home and as i said maybe a chance of getting full time. There are colleagues in the office that have half the seniorty of what i have and are full time. The way the full time vacancies are handed out is by OFFICE ONLY, so someone within that office has two years service but joe bloggs down the road has ten doesn't get it because he/she is not in that office, which is wrong in my eyes. The system should be changed so as people with the most seniorty should be asked first if they wish to transfer to another office and be made up to full time.

Its depressing at times but the only thing that keeps me working for royal mail is the overtime. I could say no to overtime, but the management would find another body to cover the overtime, so i would just be shooting myself in the foot with that one. I wish i could find another job, especially full time some where else but i can't see anything happening right now, but if i do, i would be more than happy to jump ship.

I wish someone could tell me how someone with 10 years service PT cannot get a FT duty, yet someone can walk in "off the street" as a new start, as an apprentice and get a 40 hour contract. Then go night shift with the bigger shift allowance.

What that man said. We have a young lad who was absolutely useless at the job as a postman, didn't know his arse from elbow to be frank, and now he's a deputy manager. He's got connections in the office though, so what can you expect.
