Going back in time here,the reason being is that when we had ours we made it so the reg went on the vans.
The reason for this obviously is because we all finished on the road and what with getting out later there would also be the problem of not being able to do the reg by 1pm.

So i can't understand why so many of you walkers are still doing them and judging by the posts on here are having major trouble doing them in time,confirming them either done or not done,getting them back ect.
Also there are a lot of posts regarding them failing as well because of this.

I don't know what happened, all I know is I get them every single day, and most days I I'm just past half way by 1 pm. I just ignore the time really, whatever time they get there is out of my hands, so no point in worrying about it. Nobody else is bothered, if they were they'd do something about it. When the later start times started, I thought there would be changes to 1pm specials, but no, just get on with it. If I card them they go back to the office whatever time I finish, I know nothing about confirming or whatever. If nobody is in the office, they'll find them next morning, and they'll know then that they weren't delivered.

I'm part time and don't have a van, or a PDA, and if i don't leave the office until after 11 it's just plain daft giving me 1pm specials.

When our SDD revision was done we were still on a 1pm finish so it was never a problem.
To be honest it still isn't really a problem as the time was built into the delivery span to take them.
In our office they are auto-confirmed at 12.40 and if need be the status is changed the following day.
Getting rid of them isn't a problem either as each duty has 15mins pouching off time to return them to the nearest P.O.
The only time it is a problem is on a saturday when Most of the P.O.s shut early.

Most of my FT members are back before 1pm if anyone is not going to back by the time Specials have to be confirmed then we ring up with the barcode numbers using reverse charge call. Mangement have displayed a notice on how to do reverse charge from mobiles in the event that a phone box is not possible.

I recall that when SDD first went in 12pm was still the last delivery time for specials.

I think to be honest POSTMAN that's the situation in the majority of D.O.s and always has been.

In our DO, all walkers are issued with specials. Whether or not they are delivered by 1pm doesn't seem to matter as none of us return before 2pm What the cage people do with guns/confirmation etc I don't give a rats ass. As for calling in from a phone box before 1pm? ha ha you gotta be kidding! if I did that I'd be cutting off everyday! And if my manager asked me to do it that would be my reason. What's wrong with you lot? Have a look in the mirror and see if you've got MUG tattooed on your foreheads

Only recently we've been told by our managers lately that ALL regies go on the van, no exceptions... even the ones for the shop run.

Our off ice use bikes, but if we know we're not going to be able to deliver them by 1 we give them back to our van driver

Nobody rings in before 1 pm, the actual last time to ring up is somewhat later and is based on the time specials have to be on the RM system so customers can check the delivery status. Ringing up at my D.O is for P739 specials only. If items are delivered no need to ring up.

Is there a offical agreed procedure on what to do if you will not be a DP by 1pm or is it every D.O has its own arrangements?

You imply that vans are able to take on more Specials which isn't always the case, especially on Rurals.
Our vans often struggle to finish before 3pm on busier days, so for Specials towards the end there's a need to deliver in a different order or go ahead then double back to meet the 1pm deadline which might add about 15 minutes to the day - adding Specials from the bike walks, who always finish earlier anyway, just wouldn't be practical.

Like pretty much with everything else, Postman, each DO seems to have their own approach. What is standard practice in one office is a dismissible offence in another.

In our DO specials are sacrosanct and take preference over everything else. Providing that they are not oversized, then walkers and cyclists must take their own. We have been told that they must be delivered before 13:00 even if this means breaking off to do it and then picking up where we left off. If overtime is incurred then so be it.

We have to phone in by 13:30 with any that we have been unable to deliver and, if no public phone boxes are available, are allowed to claim an extra 5 or 10 minutes overtime per week to pay for using our own phones to make the calls.

Now this appears at odds with the procedures that other offices have adopted. Why doesn’t RM have a standard approach to this issue or do they? Is it their managers who interpret the rules differently?

It’s a good question to ask because a lot of things have gone wrong since SDD. In our office following the shock of SDD cars were not used at all and anyone struggling to achieve a 1pm special was able to pass it on to a driver. But then the opportunity to make time became too strong a temptation and people begin to use their cars. At first it was only on sat but it soon crept into the week as well.

The overload drivers soon picked up on the fact the car users were finishing an hour before them so they refused to take the 1pm specials so they could finish that little bit earlier themselves. Then they pushed the over weights back on the posties as they had their cars.

The result was nearly all the overweight drive duties have gone and bag drops being done by firms. At least 70% use their cars so 1pm is not a problem. As for the rest its really only the van driving postie who work beyond 1pm anyway.

not quite
doing it that way,you confirm all SD's as confirmed on the day or delivery
then the next day ,you backdate your gun and go through confirmation with the SD's you have back
so on the day of delivery,all SD's show as delivered
the next morning the tracking updates with those that are undelivered

SD's should always be confirmed on the day of delivery,I cant remember the exact cut off times as its been a while since i was locker monkey
