Summer savings what a joke

Someone please clear this up for me now im sure summer saving as in doing ot like throwing a round of for free is aload of bull? am iI right?
Now im in a sub office its very small and we have to sort our own mail out normally there are 5 people sorting and one person throwing of as they collect the second wave now tomorrow we have to do summer savings but we only have 2 ppl sorting 1 person doing the second wave and the other on the summer savings walk.
Now can we refuse do I have any grounds to fight on I know if you finish early then fair enough but our manager tells us we have to do it before we go out.
So please can someone shed some light on this coz I would love to tell him where to shove his summer savings.

Summer saving ? Absorption / lapsing is as time allows which means its supposed to take you up to your paid hours and no more. If its going to force you to go over you can either inform a manager BEFORE you go out on delivery that you will be returning with un-delivered work at your finish time or offer to do the extra work but claim overtime.

but why should we have to bring mail back from our own walks just so that an ot round is thrown off?

Ah well that’s the stupidity of the whole thing but as management totally believe it will work (and get paid a bonus for time saved ) so it comes down to them to sort it out with yet more overtime.

You see as a postman higher management do not believe that you are possessed with any kind of intelligence or organisation skills necessary to get the job done by itself.

Does it matter? Just do as you're told and work to your time and bring back what you have left. Let the manager deal with it. Making a big deal out of nothing. Come back with a smile on your face ans hand it back, end of!

yes it does matter as I care about my customers and thx Krussel thats explains alot lol after all thats why they are managers.

Yeah you would think so but in my experience (20+ yrs) most managers want to load you up with as much work as they can and once their conference call has finished be out of the door ASAP.
Even quicker on a sat, whilst you the poor simple postie is left slogging around the streets and caring for your customers mail and feeling terrible if you have to cut off and return un-delivered mail to a manager free office or even one thats closed

Well, as senior executives in RM seem bereft of any semblance of intelligence or organisation skills, I guess they work on the premise," if it works for us, must be the same for them", sort of thing.

...but you MUST TELL the manager BEFORE you go out and GET a WITNESS !!

Surely if you know the manager is not going to be there at the end of your time and the office may be closed, you should phone in as soon as you know you won't be able to complete your walk or it could be classed as wilful delay.

No you should inform a manager before you go out if you do not think you have enough time to finish. On a really heavy Sat i know i wont get around without going well over my time but its the in between ones that catch you out. Its a good idea to phone in with special delivery No,s so the locker duty can confirm delivery.

Unless i inform a manager before i go out i will normally stay out and finish and book the extra on Monday.

Doing your job properly involves more than taking your breaks and working to time, if your going to do the job properly make sure you have the full uniform on,do not listen to ipods or similar through earpieces, do not take short cuts across peoples gardens, you should walk up and down every path and do not walk whilst reading the addresses on envelopes. I've probably missed a few that I can think of just now.
