Strike in september 2009

I remember back then that alot of delivery partimers including myself felt that other than the payfreeze there was nothing to go on strike about other than protecting fulltime jobs. Most of us agreed to support the strike based on solidarity. Now it appears us partimers were wrong to support the strike as it has resulted in us being shafted in the agreement to preserve full time jobs. Why couldn't the agreement have been more fair to part timers?

i think its because there saying to hell with part timers we dont want them in our industry and they didnt support us in the strikes.

was the strke breakers mainly part time? yes

do they want a part time industry ? no

conclusion is if your part time prepare for a tough life within rm

this is why i feel the part timers need there own network of support as the cwu has washed there hands with then hence PRO RATA

final conclusion

if your part time start looking for another job unless you want to end up signed off with stress and cash flow problems

lets face it every person in deliverys that voted yes was having a dig at part timers and everything they stand for

Im PT and Im quite happy with my pay and its the FT who can expect a tougher time at my D.O, they show there is spare capacity day after day after day after day, like the FT wandering around tescos less than 6 hours after he walked in the D.O to start work. If thats down purley to skipped M/R and working quick then I want some of what ever he is on



There are jobs with more hours and less pay and worse T and C that what I get with RML.

i know that in our office 99% of our part timers have been coming in early for as long as i can remember. Some 2 hours before their starting time and unpaid. The managers have never asked them to do this so the rest of us have tried to explain that by them working for the business at no cost would in fact jeoparadise the chances of more hours being put in the office...and perhaps their chances of having their hours increased. Turned up for work at 5.15 this morning and people who were not supposed to be there til 7 oclock onwards were already in the building!!What s joke! So dont come crying to the rest of us when you want help!

I'm part time because I chose to be part time as many others do.

I believe that there is discrimination in some quarters between full time and part time staff which is totally unjustified. Our office is about 60/40 FT/PT and there is absolutely no discrimination from Full timers to their part time colleagues. Why should there be discrimination? The majority of those part timers have been employed by RM as a part timer with the carrot of a full time job, which of course has not been offered and never will.

Royal Mail are quite happy to pay the overtime up to forty hours for part timers knowing full well that of the 40% probably half will be grateful for the extra money when it is available - they too want to make a living. It is true that some don't do themselves or their colleagues any favours by working more hours than they are paid for but the nature of the beast is that they must be ready by a certain time and whilst the delivery is supposed to be prepped it isn't.

a fully preped frame isnt allways possible and i understand that because by the time i get in theres missorts etc to be dealt with i dont mind a small amount of mail to deal with .

what i dont like is a frame prepped by sumone else that has NO IDEA about certain letters that should be in the frame of they have made a few mistakes in the prep causing problems on the walk.

listen part timers have it tough theres is no doubt about that.

what i am learning tho is this job can make a man into a real man with regards to standing up for youself and also the physical side of things.

But i have a real problem with management picking on the weak. - that is not being a man that is a coward.

full timers are also cowards picking on part timers - even tho they think there being so dam tough.

part timers are the real men of this industry . weak minded or not. they have the hardest life in rm . and if they survive then i take my hats off to them.

the cwu are also cowards towards part timers.

if i end this job by dragging a bully outside and breaking his nose then i think i would hold my head up high .

as a part timer It's one of the hardest jobs to finish on your time apart from a tueday where my office usually has a meating so we finish on our time on a tuesday most days as well.

I usually work my 5 hours a day solid. You have to be a real persistant fighter to get over time paid. So the job does teach you to stand up for yourself.
