Seems no one can get me if one exists and agreement on the above mentioned.
It may seem an stupid obvious question, but have any of you conducted your own office recording of traffic and comparing it with the figures coming out of M/Cs.
We have with the co-operation of management been allowed to conduct our own count and report our findings back to the branch and R/M.
So what did you count :
1. How many trays on each yorkie, what they were letters, flats ( Did you count the number of items in each tray)
2.How many sleeves of packets ( How do you account for the number of items in each sleeve)
3 Are drivers packets included in the amount of sleeves or are they a seperate count
4. A count on Regs and tracked packets
5. Item count on all walks letters.flats.packets,regs,recorders
Ours is been conducted next week so any advice tips past experience would be much appreciated as this could either go in our favour or back fire big time on us so its mightly important its done in the correct manner and nothings missed off the count.
Cheers Chaps ( Sorry this should have gone in the union room apologies TBT can you move it into there for me please cheers)

Re: Recording office traffic
we need to challenge stats , if RM accurate then fair enough we'll cooperate and adapt, if not then we expect their cooperation and dare i say i 'flexibility'. Strongly advise several weeks of monitoring to ensure a light week (by coincidence of course) is balanced out by a heavier one, dont forget to include d2d traffic as they are effectively mailsort now .

The traffic streams recorded at the M.C mate will be a bit more complicated than simply ltrs, fts & pkts unfortunately. The yorks you get
with large pcls on, will have a different rate as apposed to a normal shroud, conseqently the count is different for a red shroud & a cardboard
shrould, different rates (ipk's) for flats & ltrs as well. YOU can either PM me for more info or just continue with this thread if you require a
bit more info

Re: Recording office traffic
Monkey there is a number of ways you can count the mail.
You either count all the items which is very time consuming and needs plenty of people to assist.
Even you will have to decide do you count the mech or just the manual ?
Or you count an agreed amount of boxes and use the agreed amount of items per kilo to record traffic. Now the flaw in this is that not all boxes are complete boxes.
Packets are another stream which needs careful calculation as in the tests we have done this is the biggest difference.
The other thing is when a mail centre comes under pressure to clear in the night sometimes they crash sort which means some work does not get weighed and therefore is unaccounted.
Plus of course some times there are letters and flats in the packet traffic which slip through.
The other issues are since the end of siso in mail centres the number of missorts has increased especially the number 1 units.
Plus we believe that work which has been rejected by either the lsm . the FSM ( flat sorting machine ) and the walk sequencing machines whilst correctly counted are not going straight to the mech but on the manual but they are not therefore giving your office the credit for IPS which means that your office is being earmarked for cuts when you are working harder than they think you are.
I have a lot more information which i will post on here as we have done several office counts and they are quite revealing on some streams.

FFS what was wrong with just weighing it, same system run for years and was not questioned (too much anyway) in my office.

Re: Recording office traffic
Royal Mail believe we were overstating traffic by as much as 17% and lets be honest wla and wla by weight how often did we say a jumble was full or did an opg get on the scales with the bedstead or the york etc. Especially when we used to get rulc bonus for traffic increase etc.DGP1 wrote:FFS what was wrong with just weighing it, same system run for years and was not questioned (too much anyway) in my office.
In fact we used to have traffic related schemes which were great for a while as we recorded the traffic.
However when they moved traffic recording to the mail centre it is clear that when a mail centre comes under pressure a lot of work gets shunted to the delivery office without being recorded escepially packets.

Re: Recording office traffic
We have been counting our daily traffic for about 6 months and this has shown that the MC figures are complete junk. When their figures show our traffic is down on average it is actually up and vice versa. It is very difficult to get accurate figures though because the MC send yorks with trays of flats and letters mixed and the trays off the FSM have loads of letters in them.

Re: Recording office traffic
We have been recording traffic manually for approx 3 mnths with the dom`s agreement. I still dont believe the figures to be correct because we are working on average figures for a box of letters, flats and york of packets. BUT even allowing for the figures to be underestimated they do show on 90% of days that the traffic figures from the mail centre are woefully inaccurate. Always too low, never higher than manually recorded figures. Sometimes as much as 20% but more commonly about 10% out. We are recording the figures to use as evidence for the office revision (when it eventually happens). How can the indoor working hours be calculated correctly while these mail centre figures are being used. Its a joke.PhilthyPhil wrote:We have been counting our daily traffic for about 6 months and this has shown that the MC figures are complete junk.
