Time to stop chasing time
Whatever your views on this agreement the fact remains that it will be introduced.
For years people have chased time out of the job , by either coming in early , driving their cars on delivery and working their meal reliefs. Some even go and do some of their delivery before the missort retrival van arrives . Management have for years known by test letters and panelists what time the majority of indivduals have finished. Equally drivers bringing back their vans etc.
Saturday attendances where for the last couple of years mail sort 3 has virtually been non -existant and traffic levels are the same as a friday yet people still finish well before their finish time even at 12 .30.
Management are obssesed with staff now working all the hours they are paid. If they think your getting time out of the job then they are either going to cut jobs or make you absorb becuase you have time to do so.
Management dont know who is really in the top ten percent the upper decile . They have an assumption but you can bet your bottom dollar that the office they consider as in the top decile are working before their time , driving their cars and working their meal reliefs.
The one thing this agreement will do is agree realistic standards. ACAS guidelines state that 75 BSI is the norm in British industry. Any thing over 75 must have some motivation for the worker.
I have lost count of the times I have heard either the regular postman or indeed a reserve being told they are working slow because they cant complete and the reserve or RDC can because they start early.
For the first time standards are going to be in place and we have indpendent people oversee an agreement. This should stop managment introducing unagreed and unworkable standards and therefore stop mangement bullying on perfomance.
Plus CDVs will mean that your no longer an indivdual you work as a collective. This will ban cars for good.
In addition once you have walk sequencing you will have to wait till your second 40% arrives in your office before you can commence your delivery.
Lastly with regards to some of your fears of longer spans , the agreement talks about fratigue and stress and you will have a vote on your local agreement and you will be involved in shaping that agreement. Remember the agreement is desined to have no execitive action so if you dont like the delivery spans or the plan well you dont agree to it.
In terms of saturdays there are many options for less saturdays. Equally remember the agreement talks about the the vast majority finishing by 2.30 and most by 2. On saturday within exisiting hours you could get some SAs in the office for assisting preping and delivery to ensure earlier finishes once the 40% arrives. I know some offices are looking at this option already. Be creative and you will overcome some of the problems.
I realise that some of you are still bitter but the world moves on and you either decide to make the most of this agreement or your get rolled over.
Learn to use the agreement. Local reps will have the support of training and area and divsional reps.
The Head of Regions who is head of operations in Royal Mail Paul Tolhurst was anti the agreement why ? Well it gave to much back to the union wages , attendances , hours back on door to door into workload and to much involvement and to much agreement.
Look back at the leaked newsnight document and how they intended to move on without any agreement and you have to say that the agreement delivers on every issue barring the fact that a small miniority of delivery postman intially lose.
Sometimes a responsible trade union has to look at the greater good of all the members . Remember door to door will eventually be automated and we have to protect full time jobs now.
So the future is not as bleak as some of you make out. The CWU have a proud tradition of improving working conditions. Afterall the irony is that what the majority of you are complaining about and are leaving the union over is the terms and conditions like delivery spans , like door to door payments and earlier saturdays which was achieved by the CWU and two out of those 3 were negotiated by Dave Ward and Bob Gibson . ( early saturdays and delivery spans ) The difference is that they know you cant defend full time jobs with automation ( walk seqencing ) with a 3 and half hour delivery span. Others know that as well thats why a lot of areas have already agreed longer delivery spans, plus on saturdays even thou we have tried we cant stop Royal Mail using the Walk sequencing machines on a saturday.

Yeah, well I'm in the 'small minority' of delivery posties that lose, but that's alright because it will protect full time jobs! Shame for me, as I'm only part time, but I work damm hard.
"Sometimes a responsible trade union has to look at the greater good of all the members"
So why didn't they? I'm a union member, I pay my dues and I've been shafted.
Dress it up with all the pretty words you like, the result is the same. I LOSE!

Re: Time to stop chasing time
This local agreement issue is all well and good, but you KNOW full well that certain individuals, I.E the office nark and managers golden boys will be straight in the office working out a cushy deal for themselves.
More hours on certain days. Especialy the saturday, mean I have even less of a social life than I do already.
I'm losing about £25 PER WEEK!
You'll STILL get people coming in early and cutting corners. It'll NEVER CHANGE! Fact is, they'll do it even more now.
Things MAY look fine at the start, then you'll encounter problems that need looking at...Then even after 4 years of waiting, the problems that "Will be sorted shortly" will still exist.
Work together? Ahahahaha. That's a joke, right? If a small office, such as the one I work in, can't get on, how can you expect people to work on a walk together?
Local reps? Don't have one. Also it's pretty pointless when most people are utterly furious with the CWU.
I could go on and on, but I'm sure other users will address other points raised.

got it wrong 'the truth' it USED to have 'a proud tradition' now though it's self preservation for the unions paid representives thats seems the priority, a union that does not protect 'ALL' it's members is a sham union. every paying member has a right to be protected not just the 'lucky' ones utter contempt for 'ALL' members it seems is the ethos of our elected representatives

Re: Time to stop chasing time
I cannot disagree with some of things you have said, however I come from an office which was a trial office implementing van share, full georoute revision and 4 hour delivery spans. We are now finding that approximately 10% of the office are on the sick or on light duties at any one time. The introduction of longer delivery spans will cause many staff to leave this industry because their bodies will not take the constant hammering. All this tosh about taking the weight of your shoulder is crap and royal mail speak, at the end of the day you still have to walk up the garden path but you will be walking longer. I personally can't wait for the opportunity of VR as longer spans are killing me. Thank you CWU for nothing

Re: Time to stop chasing time
Credit goes to the CWU for their previous Do The Job Properly campaign but I can't see them ever mentioning that again now they are in the pay of Royal Mail - or on a more professional footing as they say.
If the spirit of the Agreement is matched in the DO's it would be bearable - just. But it won't be. You'll see evidence of that when CWU membership numbers nose-dives. Well done for killing the job, and killing solidarity in this workforce with a vote which allowed members to vote against each others interests. This was never about d2d money but workload and bullying. Two totally unresolved issues.

Re: Time to stop chasing time
And why should Full Time jobs be protected when nothing else is? Shouldn't this agreement be about efficiency and progress, how is protecting an unjustifyable staffing ratio progress? FTers get more d2d money than PTers for the same work. PTers come in to empty frames while their FT collegues have been prepping their own frames for 1/2 hour. Pters do OT almost upto FT hours just to get the job done yet get PT pension and PT holiday pay AND PRO RATA BENIFITS.
What about us CWU?

The Truth, sorry if this sounds like a daft question. But what does RDC mean in this context?
I have lost count of the times I have heard either the regular postman or indeed a reserve being told they are working slow because they cant complete and the reserve or RDC can because they start early.
Or is it a typo?

This bit i am in full agreement with, the rest is tosh. As regards a small minority in delivery.... Union selling speak everyone in delivery looses, FT and PT in fact for your information after the 3 so called pay rises i will still not be earning what i am now!!!!! and have the privalege of ruining my Saturdays and turning up at my much valued customers door with up to TEN lots of D2D which they hate (during the election have had customers abuse me, put notes on the door to stop delivering junk etc, good work to base your buisnesses future on) Great deal eh. Change the union from within ... NO Chance they are too far up RM's rear to change and too protective of thier own cushty numbers/wage.... So today i've give myself a £3 pay rise not proud of that but a trade union should be fair and balanced to all it's members and they have shafted me once too often

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
