i got threatened 3 times by a customer yesterday because i kicked his dog that was going to bite me in the street.
2nd time was in front of a copper and i had a line manager listening in too on my mobile, he also pulled up later to have another go.
manager says all he can do is temporarily cut his service due to the dog, and it's up to me to report him to police!
also got told that if he does come looking for me and starts on me, i'll probably face the sack if i defend myself!
surely if a manager heard him threaten me they should cut his service permanent and also help me out with the police?
i'm a leave reserve btw so be a while before i'll be on that duty again

Your manager is telling you porkies, at the very least they should be carrying out a walk threat risk assessment as defined in the Royal Mail Letters CSR Standard - Managing the Risk of Assault on Delivery Staff.
Local Risk Assessment:
Unit Managers will ensure that the Walk Risk Assessment process is used to identify any walks from their office that have a significant risk of assault against the delivery person. Where a walk is identified to fall into this category, the Unit Manager will complete a specific Walk Threat Assessment and deploy the control measures determined to be appropriate from this assessment. The risks identified will be reflected in the corresponding Walk Log. The Unit Manager should take the opportunity during this process to consult as appropriate with local CWU safety representative on the risks and measures being taken with regard to a significant risk of assault. Once measures have been deployed, the Unit Manager will ensure that they remain in place as long as required, and monitor their effectiveness. Where Corporate Security and/or Regional CSR become aware that there is a particular heightened risk in certain areas, they will alert the local Unit Manager(s) for the corresponding walks to this potential issue.
Incident Investigation:
In all cases, the Unit Manager will review with the individual concerned the details surrounding a reported incident of assault. Through the review, the discussion will determine the significance of the incident, and therefore the need to escalate the incident into a formal investigation. In instances where an individual has been threatened (as in your case) but not attacked, the Unit Manager will record the incident in the local incident log, and complete an incident report using the standard accident/incident investigation and reporting format to determine the need for any further action. The Unit Manager will encourage the individual to report the threat to the Police and obtain a crime reference number, and ensure that the individual reports the incident to the Corporate Security Helpdesk on 0207 239 6655 as a case of harassment.
In all cases where an individual has been injured, the injured person will report the incident to the Corporate Security Helpdesk or, if unable to do this because of the nature of the injuries, this will be completed by the Unit Manager. The Helpdesk will record minor injury as a case of 'Assault', and a more serious injury as a case of 'Wounding'. The Unit Manager will complete a formal investigation, using the standard accident/incident investigation and reporting format.
In addition to any other findings, a formal investigation will always trigger a review of the relevant walk assessments and any adjoining walk assessments. Where the incident has resulted in particularly serious injury, in addition to the local Unit Manager investigation, Corporate Social Responsibility will investigate the incident, in liaison with Corporate Security.
As stated the above is the minimum of what you should expect from your manager in best protecting your individual health and safety. Can only suggest that you report the incident to the Police and also to CSR Helpdesk and of course make sure your CWU workplace/unit or Area Health and Safety Rep is kept fully informed of the situation.

Re: dogs
You do not have to deliver mail to an address if a dog is loose, or is barking threateningly behind a door, just mark on the mail, dog loose, mark the time and date and initial it and put it back on the frame when you return to your office, same as no access but obviously with dog loose, you won't get into trouble and you won't get bitten!!! ;)

ERICA = Electronic Reporting of Incidents for Collating and Analysis or in other words the standard accident/incident investigation and reporting format used now by Royal Mail instead of the old Accident Books. I see though that you have not yet reported the incident to the Corporate Security Helpdesk on 0207 239 6655 as a case of harassment.

Re: dogs
Exactly what brothermagrew said!
Get it reported to the security helpdesk and the police.
I had someone come into the enquiry office swearing and insulting me, I called the Police after he refused to leave because I'd refused to serve him and he got fined £185... and barred from the office.
