We need to put in a vote of no-confidence maybe, and vote this agreement down, but, make no mistake, without the union things would be even worse. Let's reform the union, not wreck it. We need a revolution in the branches.

The younger generation needs to get active and start attending branch meetings. The old guard on the branch committees need to be replaced by fresh blood. Then motions can be raised etc.

The CWU is like Woolworths, it thinks it is an institution that will always be part of British life but unless it reforms, it will die. Maybe the 'baby-boom' generation don't care about what they leave for future generations in the same way they didn't care about giving away free university education and final salary pensions.

In the mean time, we need an effective way to share information. On a national level we have RMC. What we need is a local weapon to fight the combined evil of local agreements and confidentiality.

Why do we not organise a group of forum members to stand locally and nationally. I have always said if you are going to complain about anything you should be willing toget involved to try and put it right. So lets not destroy the Union, lets make it better by changing it from within.

You aren't going to get rid of them til they want to go. It's an organisation that has lost it's way and finds more in it's own survival than the benefits of those who actually finance it. The problem is it is like an incestuous relationship populated by those whose self interest outweighs any other consideration they each look after own tier of union affairs supported by the tier below in the hope that they will move up a rung.

This is unfortunately the reason why we cannot get people to join, the obviously self interested leadership, the poor communication and the negotiations that have done nothing to convince them that there is any point in committing financial support.

The way to hit this union and hit it hard is to withdraw funding, each office should make arrangements to leave the union en-masse as soon as the vote is over - if it is a yes vote - nothing would galvanise these people into action knowing that THEIR livelihood is under threat in the same way that ours is AND with their collusion.

Simply because you need to be voted and accepted by each branch - and they are like the beast with two backs.

Take my branch for example - do they communicate with the membership erm - no. Do they hold meetings for the membership erm - no. Do they actively recruit new members erm - no. Do they welcome new blood into the fold erm - no. Do they notify the members when an AGM is due - erm no. Are you going to break into their gentlemans club - erm no.

I agree, but the first step is not to get elected as the workplace rep but to get a group elected to branch positions including branch secretary.

Are there rules concerning how much notice should be given to branch members?

Well I hope given the strength of feeling that all those members spitting feathers will organise in their workplace and demand that their branch calls an emergency general meeting. Contacts in other offices should be informed and you must make sure that the EGM is packed out.Motions can be proposed ,resolutions can be passed, if you value your terms and conditions you better DO something about improving them cos it looks like trusting others to do it for you is not exactly a big success

You know how difficult it is to get the members to go to a branch meeting. Most of them can't be bothered to read this 60 page agreement and I can't blame them for that. They want to be given a summary. Asking payroll to stop your subs is a lot less effort than going to an EGM.

I suggest a vote 'No' campaign followed by a mass resignation. It would then be up to the branches to introduce the changes we want to entice us to re-join. Mind you, just threatening to do this might make the CWU give ground, it seems to work for Crozier.

I also think the salaries at CWU HQ need to be looked at. While I agree obviously there should be a decent pay structure where people should be properly rewarded, there's a danger of attracting people to the job for the wrong reasons. The salaries of the top brass are excessive in my view, particularly with the membership diminishing and I certainly don't feel we're getting value for our money.
