Royal Mail does not usually collect or deliver mail on public holidays (including bank holidays), and exceptionally on additional public holidays or local holidays (e.g. to account for when bank holidays or public holidays fall on a weekend; or to incorporate local holidays in place of public holidays).

Public holidays and bank holidays vary in different parts of the UK. Christmas Day, Boxing Day Bank Holiday, New Years Day Bank Holiday, Good Friday Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday and Summer Bank Holiday are common across the UK. Northern Ireland also observes St. Patrick's Day Bank Holiday and Battle of the Boyne Bank Holiday. Scotland observes St Andrew's Day Bank Holiday but, unlike the rest of the UK, Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland. There are also local public holidays in some parts of Scotland. The table below sets out the most common public holidays and bank holidays.
