Soggy Letters?

How many letters nearly got destroyed today on your round ? Luckily mine only got a little bit soggy, and some evelopes came apart, but have you ever got to a stage that the letters were a total write off?

The worst thing, is when you are trying to write out a 739 card, and you have hail stones coming down on you or even the special/recorded sheets, mine always get so damp

739's in the wet we are told make sure your write more clearly since they will be hard to read! Thats great coming from someone who will be either in the office with a cuppa or at home with a cuppa!

My Somefield leaflets took the brunt of the rain!
Unintended though as my bundles were tied up normally.
I think they must be printed on recycled/cheap paper or something as they are very absorbent
Seemed they suffered more than the regular mail though.

Ya gotta hand it the good ol' Royal Mail. Over 200 years delivering the Queens Mail. A Multi Billion pound business that spend Millions on machinery, transportation, wages in fact an entire infrastructure designed to deliver mail from all over this Globe- yet when it comes to the very last leg. They can't even be arsed to issue us with water proof bags.

The lad delivering the Liverpool Echo ( the local news paper ) even has a water proof bag for his papers ..and he's 14 !

What do we get, yellow bag that are too bulky. Once worked with a postie out on delivery that had carrier bags in his pocket just in case it came on rain. He used to wonder where they all went when he was out on delivery as they kept falling out his pocket.

I remember during my first stint with Royal Mail (GPO then!!) I was based at Acocks Green DO, Birmingham 27, (Station Road I seem to recall) app1976, it was during Christmas pressure (remember that ??), I went out in torrential rain with 2 overloaded pouches, one across each shoulder (Big Job!!) which were so packed the flaps couldn't be closed over the top!!!.

As I trudged my way around South Yardley (Broadyates Rd, Graham Rd, Waterloo Road Coventry Road and all, the rain was incessant, it just kept coming down cats and dogs.

In those days the pouches were made of canvas, not at all waterproof, and about three quarters of the way through the walk I realised the letters were getting rather wet (soggy!!) so it was decision time, as it was xmas, and running late I decided to cut off and return to the office.

On arrival back at Acocks Green I was given a right bollocking by the then PED Jake Jacobs, (In line with those days, he was one who had come up via Postman, PHG, Assistant Inspector etc, unlike the spotty so called "graduates" of today.

After the bollocking, Jake said "Dry them out on the radiator for an hour, go and get some grub and a cuppa , then see what you can do with them on second delivery. After that,......'nuff sed and that was the end of it !!

I am glad that I have recently retired from Royal Mail, the way it is going now sickens me, from a Job you could be proud of, indeed a CIVIL SERVANT , to....... (if Crozier and Mandyson get their way :cfo :cfo :cfo :mfo :mfo :mfo :mfo )....... well you know.

Oh I hate that and yes you are right it often smell like as if you got BO what is that make those bags smell, maybe Adam Crozier is in there :cfo :cfo

I wonder if that's the reason the bags fall apart in the corners, to aid drainage

My God..I used to think that was me..I'd get a whiff if the wind blew in the wrong direction and used to then be paranoid all delivery that people would think it was me!! I'd wash everything when I got home sometimes believing it was me !!
