On a 25 hour perm contract, is 35 hour over xmas compulsory?

I have been brought down to a 25 hour contract and have been told that they may introduce a 35 hour contract just over the xmas period, then back to normal after. I am almost certain this isn't compulsory but just for a little reassurance if someone could confirm.
