Racial Abuse by Management
I have a serious question that needs answering please.
A friend of mine was on the recieving end of racial abuse.
This happened in the DOM's office and the abuse came from the Deputy Manager.
The DOM was present at the time and both the Deputy and the DOM thought it was funny.
My friend informed the Union but still nothing has been done.
This incident took place in May of this year.

It may be best if your female colleague contacts the CWU Harassment Hotline and seeks their knowledgeable guidance at least she could get it put on record as having occured.

Re: Racial Abuse by Management
Is the area rep friends with the managers? this should have been sorted out ages ago. Your friend should have been given an HCD1 Form ( bullying and harassment form) to fill in from the CWU, it is not too late to log your complaint because you did inform your area rep, some reps and mangers like to sweep such issues under the carpet , whilst other reps deal with such matters immediately and seriously esepcially when it involves a manager. I would seriously phone up and CWU bullying and harassment helpline and try to complete RM's HC1 Form (bullying and harassment form). You can also log onto the CWU website at http://www.cwu.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and get information on racial harassment within the equal opportunities section, you can also phone the equality department at the CWU headquarters and speak to the equality team.Jack Mehoff wrote:The area rep was informed the day it happened.hubbahubba wrote:If true, this needs sorting now!But why leave it so long?

CWU Harassment Hotline knowledgeable guidance was this: "You need to speak to your union rep as this is just a Helpline". She then asked if her complaint could be logged and was told again, "You need to speak to your union rep as this is just a Helpline". I guess things are worse than I thought.

Re: Racial Abuse by Management
Jack Mehoff, please look at my previous posting. Your female friend needs to get an HCD 1 Form from your CWU branch and fill it in. Your friend can also go through the grievance procedure, she need to ask a manager for a grievance form to fill in.Jack Mehoff wrote:brothermagrew wrote:It may be best if your female colleague contacts the CWU Harassment Hotline and seeks their knowledgeable guidance at least she could get it put on record as having occured.

Re: Racial Abuse by Management
She was given the HCD1 form but she was told she has to fill it in herself. There is a lot more to this situation than I want to go into. She has decided to seek legal advice from a private solicitor as she now wants to also bring a case against the CWU because of what has been going on and the lack of help from the CWU.mailsort6 wrote:Jack Mehoff, please look at my previous posting. I have to say that she is one of the nicest people that I know. Nearly everyone of the people she delivers to know her by her first name and she is very much liked by them.
The bullying from her DOM is beyond a joke. The bullying got so bad that RM HR made her take off 2 months because she nearly had a breakdown. She returned yesterday and is now on rehab.

Remember legally your friend has to go through the RM grievance procudure, if she does not if she wins her case at an employment she could find that her award or compensation is reduced. You said that she is seeking professional legal advice which is the right route to go, good luck!

Re: Racial Abuse by Management
Jack Mehoff perhaps I should have added a previous posting of mine:Jack Mehoff wrote:brothermagrew wrote:It may be best if your female colleague contacts the CWU Harassment Hotline and seeks their knowledgeable guidance at least she could get it put on record as having occured.
CWU Harassment Hotline knowledgeable guidance was this: "You need to speak to your union rep as this is just a Helpline". She then asked if her complaint could be logged and was told again, "You need to speak to your union rep as this is just a Helpline". I guess things are worse than I thought.
In November 2002 the then CWU Dep Gen Secretary John Keggie asked Linda Roy CWU to put in place the personnel, policies, procedures and mechanisms to deal with complaints of harassment in the then Consignia and BT. The main weapon in this was the creation of a telephone helpline in CWU headquarters. At the time this initiative was widely publicised in our journal The Voice which is sent to all members. Every one of them received a harassment pack.
In the first week of the telephone helpline CWU headquarters received three hundred calls. In the first year the telphone helpline in CWU headquarters had handled five thousand. On the second anniversary of the telephone helpline creation it was estimated that twelve thousand calls would be passed.
Every attempt is made to ensure that the Harassment Hotline is staffed on a daily basis. When the caller is purely making an enquiry this is logged. Where it is a specific complaint of bullying or harassment this is also entered into a case file. All calls, files and cases are treated with the utmost confidence.
Once a complaint has been received every attempt is made to establish the facts of the case. This is particularly important where members intend to make an application to an Employment Tribunal. Unless the member objects contact is made with the relevant branch to inform them of our involvement and to discuss the allegations. Where circumstances dictate our further involvement we will visit the branch and the member to discuss the case, to advise them of their rights and to arrange representation if it is required.
The nature of complaits ranges from attempted and actual rape, sexual assault, physical assault, pornographic, racist homophobic and obscene graffiti, abusive and threatening behaviour, foul andobscene language, racist and sexist jokes, and sex, race and disability discrimination.
It was costing the then Consignia a total of £7 million for sick absences and £3 million in compensation as a direct result of proven incidences of bullying and harassment in the workplace during 2001.
Regardless of any personal opinions that CWU members may hold against John Keggie, the CWU and our members owe him a debt of gratitude for his foresight and his concerns for victims of bullying and harassment in the then Consignia and indeed British Telecom.

I have rung about 5 times over 3 years, the above is not correct in anyway, are you ringing the RM line? All calls are logged.
