Lords set to fight Royal Mail sell-off

Labour peers yesterday vowed to fight a Royal Mail sale "every step of the way".

The warning came as the House of Lords prepared to vote today on Business Secretary Lord Mandelson's plan.

Ministers may have to rely on the Tories to get the legislation through Parliament.

Former postie Lord Clarke has tabled an amendment to the Postal Services Bill calling for the reforms to be ditched.

And he warned that if his amendment was defeated, the rebels would oppose the bill "line by line" at committee stage. "We are going to harry them every step of the way," he said.

In the Commons 144 Labour MPs have signed a motion condemning the sell-off. Three Cabinet members are also said to be opposed.
