One of my mates is currently applying for a job as a part time fireman (retainer?) and needs the time off to attend an exam. He has 9 1/2 days still owing to him from last year and has even offered to swap his day off in order to do the exam, he has even said he would take the day unpaid. The DOM just laughs at him and said the answer is NO, and then gloats about the fact that the final decision is his. The DOM's obviously a complete tosser, but apart from putting in a grievance is there anything else my mate could do?

Put in a greviance claim, there should be laws and aggrements covering this.

I would write to Alan Leighton, this is not the way for a manager to behave, especially when you are applying for a job that is going to be benefical (helping the public). In fact by law you might be entitled to time off work to attend your exam because it is linked to public duty (e.g. jury service, school governors, get time off).

Totally agree, sometimes good things do happen when you "Ask Allan". I wonder if the new chairman will continue this?

Get a friend to phone your DOM and say that he is such and such, journalist for your local newspaper. Get him to ask your DOM if it was right that he is stopping your mate from attending an interview for a job that is seen as a life saving position within the town/area. Ask him if his boss knows that he is doing this not only to the postman but also he is against the town/area who so need a fireman. This will wipe the gloating smile off of his ar*ewipe face and he will change his mind over it and come grovelling to your mate. This friend will need to have a list of questions ready and be able to think on his feet should the DOM ask something that you weren't expecting but by f*ck it will be worth it if it works just to see your DOMs face

Better still, contact the local paper, and ask them to look into it for you. Just in case the DOM is arrogant enough to call your bluff. You never know, the DOM might do that.
