aggressive and abusive customers
i have this father and son team on my walk, who have a serious issue with me,three times in recent months they have verbally abused me(they run back in the house when i tell them not to speak to me in that manner
)however the question i have is,why after the dom visiting them after the 2nd bout of abuse and threatening to stop their mail has he allowed the latest bout of abuse go, with a simple visit by the line manager.i reported the incident,(a week ago)and they are still getting their mail albeit not from me,surely their mail should be suspended.thoughts please....ps the rep was supportive but health@safety wanted to go back down the offical line...

Re: aggressive and abusive customers
Take a grievance out on your line manager due to his/her apparent lack of duty of care for you. If you feel threatened or abused at any time and have brought this to the attention of your line manager and it still continues and the line manager knows this then follow the grievance procedure. It is the only way managers are made to stand up and earn their pay!

Re: aggressive and abusive customers
this is very true, if you feel threatened then must remove yourself from these possible flashpoints immediateley. The business will always say (after the fact unfortunately) that you should not put, nor were you ever expected to put yourself in this position. Speak to your rep first, tell them you are happy to continue with your delivery although in furture if this happens again you will remove yourself from the area for your own safety, and that you will not be going within 50-100 yards (your choice) of the property or individuals should they follow you Then tell your rep that you and he/she will now go and repeat this to your DOM or lino, when you speak to them add at the end that you will phone them should the situation arise and that they will need to make alternative arrangements.pcb wrote:Take a grievance out on your line manager due to his/her apparent lack of duty of care for you. Remain calm when telling them this, i don't feel this is obstructive, rather constructive. Your DOM is now fully aware that you will be doing your delivery, althoughyou will not remain in situations where you feel or believe that harm may come to yourself. You will try to remove yourself without escalating the situation further.
see how that goes.
Confused... You won't be, after the next episode of. SOAP

Royal Mail Letters CSR Standard
Managing the Risk of Assaults on Delivery Staff - Reference: CSR Standard 5.1.1 Version 1.0 April 2006
The intent of this Standard is to define the high-level framework for managing
the risk of assaults on Royal Mail delivery staff. Inherent in the Standard is the
belief that our people should have the reasonable expectation to undertake their
work duties without physical assault, physical threat or verbal intimidation.
Royal Mail considers "assault" in the context of this Standard to be "any incident
in which one of our people is abused, threatened, or physically attacked in circumstances
relating to their work, where that assault is perpetrated by a member of the public".
Specifically included are:
- incidents which result in physical injury
- attempts at robbery with threats of physical injury
- instances of threats of violence without apparent gain.
With regards to your own situation - the CSR Standard with regards to Incident Investigation says the following:
In all cases, the Unit Manager will review with the individual concerned the details
surrounding a reported incident of assault. Through the review, the discussion will determine the significance
of the incident, and therefore the need to escalate the incident into a formal investigation.
In instances where an individual has been thretened but not attacked, the Unit Manager will record the incident
in the local incident log, and complete an incident report using the standard accident/incident investigation
and reporting format to determine the need for any further action. The Unit Manager will encourage the individual
to report the threat to the Police, and ensure that the individual reports the incident to the Corporate Security
Helpdesk as a case of harassment.
For further reading of any interested CWU colleagues please refer to CWU website in particular - LTB No 170/07 dated 22nd February 2007.

Re: aggressive and abusive customers
I was constantly abused in Callers, one particular bloke called me a 'c**t', I called a manager(from the MC) who told him to go away and told him to come back when he was in a better frame of mind & with an apology to me otherwise his mail will be stopped. The following day I reported this to my Lineo in deliveries who just shrugged his shoulders and basically said 'SO'
nice to have a bit of support, no wonder working in there sent me jelly head
Anyway a couple of days later the bloke came back looking very sheepish and apologised to me, I told him I was only doing my job and I don't expect people to talk to me like that. So if you want support off your LM don't expect to get it.

Re: aggressive and abusive customers
On Wednesday I got shouted at by one of the customers which I clearly term as abusive ( and the really frustrating thing is that I had nothing to do with what had upset him.) After I had finished the round I went straight back to the depot to report the incident. All the Managers ( depot and line managers) were all there standing about the in the callers office, and I explained to them what happened. Before I could tell them the address of the abuser, one of the managers got on his mobile and said to me ' Don't worry son we'll get the FBI on it...'
. Really?? Not only that but one of the Line Managers asked me if I wanted to do a docket...

Why not kill the mail off for the offending gobsh*tes as inaccessible and as you have told your manager's and DOM and union rep let your workmates all know!. An address is undeliverable due to a number of circumstances IE dog out or path not gritted or overgrown vegetation or personal abuse or any combination of the few examples!.geefaetheeast wrote:i have this father and son team on my walk, who have a serious issue with me,three times in recent months they have verbally abused me(they run back in the house when i tell them not to speak to me in that manner)however the question i have is,why after the dom visiting them after the 2nd bout of abuse and threatening to stop their mail has he allowed the latest bout of abuse go, with a simple visit by the line manager.i reported the incident,(a week ago)and they are still getting their mail albeit not from me,surely their mail should be suspended.thoughts please....ps the rep was supportive but health@safety wanted to go back down the offical line...
