Well done and thanks to geezer for posting this, and top marks to our union's National, Health, Safety & Environment Officer Dave Joyce for a well thought out and constructed letter. And being an outdoor postie and CWU Safety Rep to boot I sincerely hope that charges are brought and said owner has his day in court. Tis only a pity that Royal Mail did not instruct their own solicitors to pursue a case against the owners of these dogs.

visit to the Hospital from the DUM to avert yet another PR disaster , and RM temporarily holding fire from putting the poor guy on RMAP are all very well - but at the end of the day , it's all spin and hype - possibly for " The Courier's " benefit , RM tick - box sheets and brownie points - all shallower than a tap dancer's smile

- no concrete action whatsoever for one of RM's " people "

this culture comes from the top and there's a long line of cause and effect that goes all the way back to :lfo & :cfo

What a superb letter.I wish it could be published in all the broadsheets as well.A copy should be sent to the editor of the Cambridge Evening News in Cambridge so the public in the area can read it.

What sickens and saddens me the most is this found in The People Management Framework - Dealing with Dog Attacks - Good Practice Guide.

Page 5 of 21 sub-para 3.10
In all cases of injury staff will be encouraged to report the incident to the Police.
Managers will actively support their staff during this reporting process. Where the
Police decline to take action and RM considers there is sufficient evidence instructions
will be given to Legal Services by the Accident Administration Unit to act on behalf of
victims in proceedings under the Dogs Act 1871 or the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

All we have been able to assess from Royal Mail so far, is that they are carrying out a full investigation. On viewing and reading closely
Dave Joyce's letter to the Chief Constable and in which I am in total agreement with, it would appear on the surface that the Police may
decline to take action.

I would sincerely hope that Royal Mail under their duty of care deems that there is sufficient evidence and accordingly instructs their Legal Services Department
to act on behalf of the victim in court proceedings.

How is this poor chap is he making a good recovery. I have been looking for any information about him, is he home yet or still in hospital.Not that it compensates what he went through but I hope he gets a load of money.
