A LETTER TO ALL CWU MEMBERS

Dear Colleague
We know you will be worried and anxious over how last week’s Government announcement affects your jobs, pensions and the future of the company.

Once we have had the opportunity to fully consider the Hooper Report, the Union will be writing directly to all CWU members early in the New Year setting out our position and providing you with more information.

In the meantime, we want to convey the following messages which respond to developments since the Government’s announcement.
• On Friday 19th December the General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary met with Lord Mandelson.

The Secretary of State confirmed that although the Government had accepted, in principle, the three Hooper recommendations; there were no detailed proposals on either the possibility of a Joint Venture, pensions or the new regulatory regime to replace Postcomm.

The Secretary of State further confirmed that early in the New Year the Government would invite the Union to be involved in direct discussions over how all of the recommendations are taken forward. Lord Mandelson said it was very important to Government that the workforce were satisfied with the final outcome.

• The Union will be organising a nationwide campaign to stop the Joint Venture and partial privatisation of Royal Mail. As part of our campaign we will put forward an alternative proposal, which will ensure Royal Mail can be successful with full public ownership. Key to this will be to build on our success in getting the Government to face up to its responsibilities on pensions.

• Royal Mail’s latest propaganda on what the Government’s announcement means to you is both premature and deliberately misleading.

The Hooper Report is critical of Royal Mail in the following areas:-

o Hooper states that management does not have sufficient expertise to run a postal operation.
o Hooper states that there is a complete lack of transparency over Royal Mail’s finances.
o Hooper states that Royal Mail has failed to properly engage the Union and the workforce.

We believe Royal Mail’s position is really about the exit strategy of some Board members. We are prepared to play our part in improving industrial relations. However, we remain opposed to Royal Mail’s slash and burn approach to so called modernisation.

Good,I await the start of this with mucho anticipation,just as an aside,tried to join a number Labour Mp's facebook groups,but it looks like Im persona non grata

maybe I should not have said that partial privatisation was a bloody disgrace and that they better start looking for new jobs.

Still awaiting a reply from my MP re Hooper but then in the past 4 years I have sent him 3 emails and he only responded to 1.

Thats a point TBT,I've got 2 replies from Fife labour Cllrs,nothing from the Fife Labour list Msp's as yet,(christmas hols etc),but I am hoping that I'l get something within the next few days,Im only trying the Labour yins at the moment cos they belong to the party thats trying to privatise us,not because of any lingering sentimental attachment to the Party,however if any of you are up for sending a couple of e mails to a close confident of Mr Broon,please feel free to e-mail

Well how unbiased is Mandy - and when he says the workforce need to be satisfied with the outcome - does he mean the workforce or the Union Leadership, because there is a world of difference.

I also created an e-petition on the No.10 website. It went off for approval but i've heard nothing, what are they playing at?

Anyway, heres the text, i'll let you know when (or if) it goes live!

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to think again
with regards to the proposal to allow TNT to acquire a stake in
Royal Mail.

Royal Mail is not for sale; be it on a minority shares basis or
complete privatisation. History shows that privatisation in
whatever form leads to increased prices for the customer and
reduced/scaled-back services. We want Royal Mail to become
profitable within the public sector, wholly-owned by the
Government. Without the need for TNT. What can TNT do that
Royal Mail cant? The answer is nothing and this excercise will
only serve to strip out valuable public assets. Let us all gain
from a healthy, profitable, 100% Government-Owned Royal Mail.

went on the site and......... 'Notice: Submission of new petitions will be closed from 23rd December to 5th January while the Prime Minister is away from Number 10. This will allow the Number 10 e-petitions team to progress with recently submitted e-petitions and to prevent a backlog of unprocessed petitions. You can still sign any petition during this time'.

Ok thanks, i submitted mine early last week, maybe they're working there way through the backlog. I'll keep an eye out!
