Rights of employees
As an employee, your employer is obliged by law to deduct Income Tax and National Insurance contributions (NIC) from your salary or wages before paying them to you. You're also entitled to all minimum statutory employment rights including:
* maternity, adoption and paternity leave
* the right not to be unfairly dismissed
* statutory redundancy pay
* all the rights that are given to 'workers'
It's a statutory thing and RM HAVE to abide by those rules.

Family-friendly updates
The updates in terms of improvements to rights, maternity and paternity leave have still not been given a timescale for implementation by the government. The Work & Families Act 2006 (amended regs) made provision for two major elements of the Act to be enhanced, namely the new additional paternity leave and pay and secondly the extension from thirty-nine weeks to fifty-two weeks of statutory maternity pay, maternity allowance and statutory adoption pay.
The CWU campaigned hard during the consultation period for the improvements and we are obviously keen to see the enhancements come in sooner rather than later. Linda Roy national equality officer said “we will be watching these events closely to ensure these improvements are pushed though as soon as possible. The changes are not exactly ideal but still represent an obvious improvement to terms and conditions vis-à-vis maternity and paternity rights.
The government has confirmed that it has a goal to extend the SMP, MA and SAP by the end of this parliament.
