Why is New Year's Day even being discussed?

Post by Postmangit »

We’ve never worked New Year’s Day. We should all stand together on this one if the unbelievable happens. Most of Royal Mail staff still pissed up & having to drive vans ? 🤪🍺

I honestly don’t know what all the worry is about New Year’s Day. Few in our office have been flapping and crying about it. The statement from ofcom pretty much says they are going to grant it but the formalities of a consultation has to be done. We won’t be working New Year’s Day.

Up untill 1974 New Year’s Day was just another working day in England and there were deliveries On Christmas Day untill 1960 and we worked On Good Friday for Many years, but it was never compulsory and paid well or you could have the day off in lieu + Time and a Half. There was never many no shows.

Whaaaaaat ? deliveries on christmas day until 1960 !? 3 letters to deliver from a leather pouch and going
from house to house testing the mulled wine and mince pies with a train set on your sled. I was only two years old then, who new ?

Some of the old boys when I started worked xmas morning, and they told me a lot of them got really p***ed with all the drink they were offered on their way round.

I remember working good Friday most gates shut so you had to walk down the drive to find the dog was loose because they were not expecting a delivery
