Congratulations for breaking away, and best of luck to you. I reckon it only takes a matter of months before folk get “institutionalised” at Royal Mail, and although the grass always looks greener on the other side, most are too scared to make that leap.

Its still a good job compared to many others,thats why the majority stick with it theres not many other jobs that you finish at 2 pm every day,it becomes to much if you take on to much work and dont tell the managers no means no.

The job here is what you make it. No one can force you to work past your time and to be honest I know its not all bed and roses at RM but what I do know is that im always home for the latest 3pm everyday (half the time im home at 1.45pm), I don't work Sundays or bank holidays*. I dont have to try and get home in the dark in peak time traffic. My hourly wage is over £12 which is not that bad compared to carers that also do back breaking jobs for £9 an hour or shop/supermarket workers that also work for £9 and have to do a veriety of shifts including Sundays and bank holidays.
My mate has just jumped ship from RM to working on the bins and although his shift pattern is great (every Sat, Sun and Mon off) the full time salary is £21k over 37hrs. I can get the same wage doing 5hrs less each week.

*If/when RM put compulsory Sunday working into our shift pattern then I will probably try the bins myself as this would be a massive game changer for me, I simply will not work Sunday's for anyone, but in the meantime Im sticking to the job because I try not to let them grind me down. Work til your time unless it suits you!!!

Yep, I left earlier this year after almost 25 years, better job & benefits, and on top of that a life outside of work including weekends off. I will never go back. You are quite right about the institution attitide, but believe me RM does not stand out now with pay and benefits, and if you put into the pot how hard you have to graft for what you get, RM is actually worse! Yes it is a big decision but it is only once you're out that you can see just how much the job drags you down. A lot of employers are interested in posties as they know they have a good work ethic.

Congratulations in the new job. As a long term unemployed person I was only too pleased to get a 3 month contract via the agency to work at RM. The 8hr, 9hr plus days, 6 days a week dont bother me at all and its far from the hardest job ive ever done. Maybe I lucked out a bit being at a rural DO? However just to have some pressure, a routine and to be doing something satisfies a lot of my needs, and the money aint that bad, certainly beats veg picking for below minimum wage!

There probably won't ever be too many Sunday deliveries, RM would probably get the LAT offices doing them

Im not sure, but i dont think there are many other jobs (of similar pay) where most days you are given too much work to complete within your contracted hours, and often have to go through quite a stressful confrontation just to be able to walk out of work at your contracted finish time.

The shorter days is not a benefit when you have to argue just to finish on your contracted hours. Sure there's many worse jobs out there, but there's not many worse companies out there!

There's no way i'll stick here long term, there's just too much BS here to deal with. The holiday system is pointless and a joke, mybundle is poor and topcashback and credit cards can offer better, zero support, toxic environment, no or little toilet stops, oh and working Saturdays. The 1 in 4/6 is nice if you like that, but i don't.

The job doesn't feel secure and i have zero confidence in the CWU.

HOWEVER, if the managers here didn't exist i bet most attitudes would change.

Managers are literally the poison in RM. Find me one person that has left that didn't leave because of the management or partly because of the management.

Even the managers that aren't bullies, are poor organisers or hide away from work and employees. Effin joke.

That's correct people get mixed up with the job which is a separate issue to dealing with management, the job itself is good the pay is ok given it's not skilled but you do have to be thick skined and up on your rights as an employee,To say it's a hell hole depends on what you did before,again most people stay what does that tell you.

We've now had 83 people leave in two years, yes some where newbies but the amount of long term colleagues who have left or are thinking of leaving is really rather depressing and this was some of them who I'd never thought would leave. I think our office is a hell hole and the Dom is a Psychopath.

I think a lot of posties stick with it because of the ammount of "time" they've invested in RM (especially Pension) .

If you're in your 50s or 60s I think you're more likely to stick it out, and we've got a high proportion of Older workers in this Business. Ironically it's these Older Posties that remain who feel that extra workload more.

What has become apparent in my Office recently is the ammount of knowledge you lose when those Older guys leave. New Recruits arrive, and are given little or no training, then they're left to get on with it. It's not until you find yourself constantly having to tell them that they need to do this, or that, (and it's through no fault of theirs) that you realise just how many hundreds of little pieces of information that a Postie has to deal with on a Daily Basis.

As with many things in life: When you lose that experience it's not that easy to replace.
