Our office's walk sequenced prepping times are making their way around the office , they are good for a laugh . We will be receiving walk sequenced mail in May .

Prep covers the following .

Collect Work .
collect mail from inward sorting , collect walk-sorted and sequenced mail . Collect small packets .

Prepare.
Sort mail into frame.
sort small packets .
prep d2d's .

Cleardown .

handle redirections
kill off dead letters
handle missorts
clear work from frame and bundle up . pack pouches or trolleys
weigh pouches
collect special delivery items
collect oversize and tracked packets
collect keys and log book
collect and log on to PADs
Load Van
Sign out

We have 57 duties and the average prep time = 1hr 20 mins . The duty with the longest prep time = 1 hr 43 mins and the duty with the shortest prep time = 54 mins . Can anyone actually carry out the prep work in the time specified ? .

I get 1hr 15 mins to prep 581 delivery points  .

Here's a thought for you, get you Rep involved in this too it shouldn't take much organising.

Go to one of the frames which has to be thrown in for a later starter and throw in all of the walk-sorted mail only. Once done, take it all out in sequence, bundle it and place it where it would normally be collected from.

Now start timing everything as per your schedule above. Don't forget the packets etc. too, (all of that s**t you pile up on top of the frame) since you appear to have not included in the prepare section.

This would be a perfect yardstick upon which to base your discussions for the walk-sequenced revision you are heading towards.

Small packets and handling missorts have now been added to the prep work list . The " What's involved in prep " list come from the planner and he forgot to add small packet collection/ sorting and handling missorts , Thanks for pointing that out . Our rep , planner and office managers are currently concentrating on getting our outdoor delivery times extended . The Planner , union rep and office managers have agreed that HCT outdoor work should be increased by 30 mins to 4hrs and P&l outdoor work increased by 45 mins to 4 hr 45 mins. The DOM has to put the argument to his boss next week , so for now we just have to wait and see . If they're successful in getting the outdoor time increased I think the next step will be to get the prep times increased . If they get delivery and prep times increased I don't know who will be doing IPS ?. They can juggle with the hours and what we do when we are there , but at the end of the day I think more hours will need to be put back into the office to make revision work .

I thought DM revisions were only implemented hand in hand with Walk Sequencing .How can skull have P&L before full walk sequencing?

What's a clear frame policy , is it when you have to take all the duties mail out even if you know you can't deliver it ? .

Is there any other office's doing p&l and not having any walk sequenced mail . We have started to get some walk sequenced mail for the first time this week but we've been doing p&l since early December .

I've heard murmurings that when the May sequencing begins at Barrow' only one wave of the mail will be arriving sequenced initially. The other(s) will remain as walk-sorted which will obviously screw up the timings they've presented.

I'd be inclined to ask your planner what figures are going to be used until all waves arrive sequenced and how long it will be after the start of sequenced mail before it all arrives like that.

Yes the planner and union rep have pointed out that if we can't prep and deliver in the time given we need to start documenting why things are taking longer . They just can't act on posties saying " it's just impossible " , they need the evidence to support the argument that us posties need more time . No one can fault our new planner , he is really trying his best to make this second revision work . Whith the help of the union our rep got the first planner removed , I pity any office that gets him , " the computer says it is possible " .

We have got the prep time figures for walk sorted and for walk sequenced . When we get the percentage of walk sequenced against walk sorted some intermidiate times should be worked out .

Currently my duty prep times are 1hr 34 mins for walk sorted and 1 hr 15 mins for walk sequenced .
I got told Rm hired Doctor Octopus from Spiderman 2 to do some prepping , he was pretty good so they are the figures they are using .

What you have to understand is that this is a "should take" resourcing figure using a certain traffic model week, call rate,D2D and sequenced/sorted percentage.
It will on most days bear no resemblance to what it will really take.
Managers have to consider this and have a real structure in place to deal with the times when traffic is above these model values.
An over-reliance on members ability to "flex up" was what led to a lot of the early revision failures.

Chances are that could go up the wall.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
