I did TUC Health and Safety stage 1 and stage 2 a bfew years ago hada bit of a row over paid/unpaid leave but was allowed the release and let the powers that be get on and sort it out.
Does the national aggrement on safery reps etc in RML need redoing? Rights established by law have been signed away from local safety reps to area safety reps. Time for a new aggrement!

I couldn't agree more Daz. When i went in for my Grievance hearing, the manager hearing the grievance had a copy of the said agreement so this agreement although it goes a long way to helping Area Reps, if Area reps have not given any responsibilites to Local Work Place reps, the agreement does not help them very much.Big Daz wrote:I did TUC Health and Safety stage 1 and stage 2 a bfew years ago hada bit of a row over paid/unpaid leave but was allowed the release and let the powers that be get on and sort it out.

In my opinion the Work Place Reps need training more as they are the people who deal with issues on a day to day basis in the working environment, and area rep may not see that local working environment from one month to the next!

It is my manager who is saying it is not relevant but I can not find out where he is getting his info from. I will persist though and see what happens. Thanks for the advice Ade[/quote]
Firstly i can't see what it has to do with your manager, He/she is treading on dodgy ground if they are trying to stop a safety rep from getting training (There are laws) If they refuse you leave to attend H&S Courses or Meetings There is a strong case for appeal.
If you apply for h&s 3 and the manager blocks it get in touch with alvescot as they are very good at putting pressure on managers.

The problem comes where they differentiate between an Area Rep and a Work Place Rep. Our managers (and it appears the CWU Agreement) say that the Stage 3 is only relevant for Area Reps and not Work Place Reps. They refused me release for Stage two which I am currently pursuing through a Grievance (I did have the release time but I had to pay the time back!!)
The CWU agreement does not help WSR's in my oppinion.

I was only a wsr when i done my h&s 1,2 and 3 although i must admit the mail centre manager is very h&s aware, maybe this helped but it seems to me that none of our managers stand in the way of any courses we apply for....we must be lucky.

As you can see from the post that I put a while ago, union training is sometimes not enough and dependant on where you live differs enormously.
Maybe the CWU should have an organised training plan for all reps and not make it dependant on branch funds, that way we are all at the same level of union training. It will make us as good as each other.

Andy C. Price. Bitterne Manor delivery office.
A suspended CWU unit rep of seven years. Suspended for following instructions of his area delivery representative.
The area delivery representative still holds his position?
