Exactly. While it might be better than being a courier for now, the direction of travel is clearly southbound.
The machine stops.

Re: Delivery staff leaving royal mail.
Yes, comparatively speaking it is indeed great pay.You worked for 20 years in the “corporate world” in London and think Royal Mail is great pay?
Although I was on £50k pa (including an annual bonus) towards the end of my time in the legal sphere, every minute of my life was “bought”, weekends, evenings, days off, holidays and all, and I was reachable by phone or email pretty much 24/7. I’d wake up in the middle of the night and run down to do something I’d forgotten. Work took precedence above everything - kids, family, everything. The salary isn’t so much for the work you do - they are literally purchasing you as a human being and every waking and sleeping hour with it. It got much, much worse once I became based predominantly from home in 2012 and it took over my life completely. Sixteen-hour days were then the norm, sometimes for two weeks solid, including weekends, followed by a few easyish days in between “projects”. There were perks, and the job was fascinating in every respect, but it takes over your life completely.
Looked at in this way, my “corporate” job was paying me less than Minimum Wage. With Royal Mail, I earn a very decent hourly rate and get the work/life balance right. I’d go so far as to say it is the best pay for unskilled work available anywhere.

I’ve just checked and minimum wage is £10.42 an hour. I can’t be alone in earning more than that surely?

It would help if you worded your posts correctly. Minimum wage is closing in on our pay rate would be accurate but it is still nearly £4 an hour less. If you’d be happier flipping burgers for minimum wage go for it. But don’t expect minimum wage to even get close to what we make.

The National Living wage is suggested to reach £12 per hour next April (10% increase)...that's more of a barometer on what might be catching up to us. Those of us on older contracts are still comfortably ahead of this.....
...at the moment. New recruits less so.

Re: Delivery staff leaving royal mail.
Having people earn more money in general is a good thing. I’d love to see the minimum wage rise as fast as possible as it benefits us all. The national living wage is pointless. It is almost impossible for people on low incomes to buy a house. To me, a living wage equates to more than making enough money to survive. You should be able to house, clothe and feed your family on that amount.1560loopsayear wrote: ↑25 Oct 2023, 20:25The National Living wage is suggested to reach £12 per hour next April (10% increase)...that's more of a barometer on what might be catching up to us. On the minimum wage, the national living wage, or indeed our wage, you can’t. But that is a consequence of our broken country not RM.

Re: Delivery staff leaving royal mail.
I just left the company 2 months ago to work for a pensions company.
I'm earning £14.75 ph Mon-Fri Full time.
They also have negotiated a £1,500 pay increase for us in April, and a £500 xmas bonus.
I worked for 25 years as a postman and wanted a new challenge and to get out before next year.
Was never about the money, just a better work life balance.
Their is other Jobs out there that pay well and have good opportunities.

‘One most’ I tend to stay generally consistent. Comparatively speaking, the new contracts are shitty, but in the grand scheme of things, the job is still good. I am thankful to be on the old legacy contract and pension, let us put it that way. Overall I couldn’t be happier in the job and look forward to going into work every single day, unlike some obviously.enskied wrote: ↑25 Oct 2023, 22:56Lou you flip flop every post. Hope this helps? Any other questions unrelated to the topic, feel free to fire them my way as you seem fascinated by me like a few on here. I’m not that interesting though I warn you.

All we need is the third of the three stooges now. Just like clockwork. Fine, let us make yet another thread about me.
