They will reduce the number of walks by taking out the large parcels. Giving people more time to do more delivery points, reducing the number of walks. A neighbouring office has just done that. 11 walks taken out, making them bigger. 10 parcel duties put in.

The whole 9 to 5 thing are clear scaremongering tactics made by the CWU and they did this last time. The reality is that there just aren't that many LATs to justify offsetting half the workforce's shifts to evening deliveries. And the priority that Royal Mail attaches to its letters is massively inversely proportionate to the shareholders profits. If the company can just increase the price of its 1st class stamps by 10%; a 10% pay increase for its staff is not unreasonable. Many companies just give staff a straightforward pay increase if they made operational profits.

Whilst many of the managers are losing their jobs through voluntary redundancy; aren't the existing managers being kept on/recruited as a new role of Customer Operations Managers on £42k+?? If you are an existing Delivery Line Manager then thats quite a big jump in salary. Maybe the new positions have got plenty of strings attached though like more time spent out on deliveries and less time indoors drinking coffee and eating donuts.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

You are completely missing the point. In Ricky Maculeys letter he makes clear reference to reducing the use of flight to transport the mail.

Remember Royal Mail have an obligation to delivery the uso to 29 million addresses 6 days per week. In order to do this to current inward mail centre and delivery start times it has to fly the mail around the uk especially the remote locations.

If they cease flights which is part of their strings pay offer then start times will have to move to connect with the arrival of work now transported by either rail or road which will come in later.

It really is not rocket science and it is not scaremongering.

The later parcels are linked to their parcel hub strategy which is they do not want format 3&4 parcels to connect to core delivery and instead want them to be delivery in the 363 LAT offices later in the day. The reason they want this is to make the LAT product more efficient. The end result is unless your one of the 363 LAT units you lose all your larger parcels and therefore you will not require the same amount of hours in your office.

Again this not scaremongering this is in Royal Mail’s proposal.

The CWU want a no strings pay deal but Royal Mail are saying that any pay deal must be linked to reductions in costs , increased flexibility and productivity.

Hence why the Postal Conference will be debating an emergency motion to activate the legal consultation process of the DRP agreement and then ballot the members for strike action if Royal Mail don’t awarded us an acceptable pay award.

If that does happen, roughly how long would it be each day between when the final dispatches go out to DOs and when the LAT stuff arrives at the MC to go out to the hubs (especially if RM do away with using planes)?

Was it not forseen when the Hubs opened that the Heavy & Large plus Late Posted Items been delivered from LAT Hubs would reduce the Workload in the remaining DO,s

Yes it was for seen as the parcel automation can only sort to 400 selections which means it can only sort to 363 delivery offices and 37 mail centres.

The CWU have and will continue to argue that the work can arrive to connect with the core delivery and that the work can then be sorted into the different delivery office and transported to them rather than 363 LAT units delivering to the 1286 delivery postcodes.

That will depend on the latest exceptence time RM are planing to except items into the Hubs
Under the CWU proposals the items may as well be sorted to the Inward MC for Resorting / Distribution

Just deliver mail that normally gets flown around a day later , no need to change attendance times then.

That goes against the USO license and Royal Mail cannot change it. Royal Mail have first class Quality of service targets 93.5% the next day. So simply delaying the mail the next day will not be acceptable especially to DSA providers.

DSA mail doesn't get flown around.
That's why it's called down stream access.

Of course Royal Mail can ask for changes in the USO and I doubt in the present climate (excuse the pun) if RM presents a case based not only on cost and efficiency but also environmental sustainability anybody is going to try to justify flying bits of paper around the country to connect with an arbitrary next day first class delivery that to be honest nobody really gives a s**t about.

This smacks of throwing clogs at the machines Martin.

Anyway removing the flights is only part of the negotiation process if the union is weak enough to allow it to be.

We did this at our office last year, it wasnt cost effective and was scrapped

So do we and we’ve still got it along with deliveries not going out and parcels left behind.

Woody that was not the question I was asked. I was asked why don’t we just leave the mail to the next day.

We all want a no strings deal ! Except the company.

Flights are only one of a number of strings. Terry mention removal of all allowances/ buy outs and the creation of a two tier work force. However there are more which will come out this week equally unacceptable.

Royal Mail and the Board at the moment do not want to give us circa 400 million in a pay deal without strings.

I know I am prepared to fight for that and hopefully after our conference emergency motion later this week that our members will get the opportunity to support a no strings pay deal via an industrial action ballot!

The obvious flaw in removing the large parcels from core delivery is if you have a quiet day on letters but heavy on large parcels (or vice versa) half your staff are sitting at home with their feet up while the other half are booking overtime.

It's another idea from the big box of out of touch ideas.

It might do some good if senior management and senior CWU officials moved away from the spreadsheets for five minutes.
