I get that Royal Mail is a business with shareholders now and it means they need to make as much money as possible to keep them happy but what they seem to forget is they don't just have shareholders, they have employees and with that they have a responsibility to keep those employees safe. In my office we have walks that are in a really rough area (stabbings/shootings in broad daylight). If people are willing to do that in the middle of the day I don't doubt for a second that at 4:30pm in December when we're carrying someones new phone they're getting for Christmas and its pitch black that they'll be willing to do something to take it from us. Add to that the ice we wont be able to see in the dark down peoples poorly lit paths then 9-5 is an idiotic risk that shouldn't be taken to give customers a service they don't want. If I order a parcel I don't want to be waiting in until 5pm for it to be delivered and I doubt many others do either.

what are theydingo wrote:Royal Mail"s have not formally changed their position of wanting a 17:00 last letter finish time 6 days per week. With deliveries only being allowed out from mid-day. There is no prospect of Royal Mail not delivering on Saturdays as the peak ordering day on the internet is Friday.
This policy of Royal Mail is not really linked to later acceptance times. This policy would allow Royal Mail to have a bigger processing window which will allow them to have the multi bundle option. Read Mike Newby"s proposal on pay and your see the strings behind the pay offer.
Remember if you move the final dispatch in the mail centres you do not need the amount of hours on the late shift between 17 00 and 22 00 where a significant amount of part timers are employed and SA is performed.
This will allow Royal Mail to wait until between 90 and 95% of the work is available to sequence. For the majority of mail centres this is circa 02 00 in the morning. This will mean that work will come into delivery offices much later than the 2 hours which Royal Mail have predicted at moving start times.
It would also move area distribution from nights to early shifts and depending on the batch plan will mean bigger vehicles being used.
Royal Mail have suggested they might move from 17:00 to 16; 00 but they would want any new staff and any part time staff either made up to full time to automatically to go to 17:00 but based on 16:00 last letter deliveries would not go out until 11:00 or later depending on the multi bundles plan.

Yes, stabbings, shootings, muggings. There are plenty of no go areas where I deliver - the druggies outside the flats, p*ssed up gangs of youths on the street corners. Only yesterday, armed Police were battering down some bloke's door and this was in broad daylight.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I've known about the possibility of a strike for ages so I am financially prepared. No one really wants to go on strike but if you are not treated fairly then you need to stand up for yourself. A short term financial gain- weeks wages and one off payment will be long term pain. Especially pension wise where you will lose thousands of pounds a year in retirement for your £350 blood money and caving in now. I definitely think that a series of one day strikes week after week IF required would be most effective - say every Wednesday with a work to time rule the next day as well would have far more impact than walking out for a week at a time. This would also have less financial impact on us.
This Potential IA is different than any before for RM because it's the first as a PLC, so it's a game of poker, previously they could stand up and say take it or leave it with Government backing, this time they are playing with profits, potential big lost business and share prices as well as Chief executives salaries and bonuses so have much more to lose. Oh and they are still legally required to deliver post to every address in the country every day so frankly are jobs going to be list?? No... they can't keep staff as it is because of the issues in the company.
STAND TOGETHER- don't be trampled upon by the ££££ making fat cats, remember public opinion changed massively at the last general election. We are in a much stronger position than people think.
