I'm one of the very few in my office who don't come in early, I'm part-time (have been for over 4 years now) on a 28 hour contract, start time is 07:50 Mon-Wed, 08:20 Thu/Fri and 06:50 Saturday. The majority of the part-timers come in very, very early, some as early as 5am  since they have a hard-on for finishing at about 11.

That said, I do try and get in early on a Saturday, but since I've been working a 2nd job on Friday nights, I usually fail in this respect. When Celtic are at home on a Sat it's an absolute c**t when I miss games due to not getting home in time/being too fecked to make the game. :mad

We can't leave the office till about 8:20/8:30 (Mon-Fri) when the missorts come in, but it pains me to see all the part-timers who've came in mega early all tied up and ready to go. I wait for the van at half 9, first letter is usually at 9:45 and I'm done for roughly 1-1:15pm. Move things forward an hour for most Saturdays, though on the really heavy ones (No Mailsort on a Saturday they said, that'll be f**kin right!) I've been known to finish later and then miss the Saturday football. But then I don't run about my duty like a demented loony, sweat pishing off me and the like.

Anyway rant over, I very rarely come in early. :chuckle

I'm usually in about 1 hour before my start time but not to work for royal mail, i have a coffee and then check if thre is anyH&S issues need looking at. I then start at11am but it so happens that i have 1/2 hours release so i just carry on with union work. then i have another 1/2 hour release after meal relief.

So are you sort of saying, you're forced to start early.
Yes - but of course RM would say it's up to me.

If I had my own round things would be oh so different - I'd start at 04:45 and be happy to finish at 13:17 each day - doing things the RM way (might mean I can't deliver all the mail  )

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I did all that and was taken into the office and, in front of the union rep, told:

"you can be sacked at any time in your first year of employment and you can not appeal"

(I'd left the business for 6 months then returned so was a "new starter")

When I get my round - then I will have the safety of arguing, knowing I am safely on a round etc.

Don't know if that makes sense or not!

Ok right,1st of all i'm thinking you should make a post in the union forum and put this post ect in there.
I'm thinking also,after 6 months trial you're in,and a proper fulltimer/part timer if you know what i mean.
I'm also thinking,i do this a lot lol, that your manager and rep are full of s**t.
i've never heard of that one year bollox,i'd get it double checked if i was you, that aint on.

I've been back for 2 years now and those previous managers have "moved on". Like I said, I'll wait until I've got a round that I can call my own. I remember looking up about the sacking/appeals thing and I'm sure there was something along those lines.........

early starts

Post by gspot01 »

cant believe the amount of people i have read going down the line who actually have brainwashed themselves into thinking that coming in early is acceptable.

I dont know one postie who works to his time, so can one of you tell me why everyone is in so much of a rush. If you have to arrive early at your workplace, why not go and sit in the rest room and have a cuppa and a bickie.

No wonder the union find it so hard to stick up for your rights when the managers dont even have to ask you to help out for extra time, you actually want to work extra time in the mornings for no extra money.

Why do you think they are now coming at us with guns blazing, its because the work is all done long before they expect it to be done. AND ITS NOT COST THEM A PENNY.. only person it will cost is you, because you are going to continue to do this and still have extra added on to you.

In my office we are not allowed to come in early. The doors are kept closed until 5-10 mins before earliest duties start. We're also not allowed to use our own cars on delivery. The DOM said this was the area decision and as of yet it's not been officially changed (as far as I'm aware, but I'm only part time so I miss some things). If we're caught using private cars on delivery, we're likely to be taken down the conduct code. I usually arrive at the office 5 minutes before my start time, take my coat off, and go to my frame. I don't work without being paid.

15 MINS EARLY!

Post by mdtomuk »

 BECAUSE I'M A BRAINLESS TWERP! OF THE 35/40 FULL TIME ROUNDS I'D SAY ABOUT 60% COME IN UP TO 45 MINS EARLY! I'M 15 MINUTES BECAUSE I'M AWAITING MY FRAME TO BE RE-ARRANGED AND IT TAKES SOOOOOOO LONG TO SORT IN THE CODED BUNDLES. I RECKON I'M ONE OF THE QUICKEST SORTERS ON THE PLANET BUT MY FRAME IS USELESS, IN FACT I'M STILL ONE OF THE LAST 10% OUT! PERHAPS IT'S ME THAT'S CRAP! BUT I'VE GOT A NICE SMILE THOU . . . . . AND I'M SO LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING TO MY 318 "HAND ME THE CUT-OFF FORMS, MY MAN!" :Very Happy

Come in at 4 (5am is the time i am paid from). Two reasons, first is the limited amount of free parking available (all full by 4.20am) and the second is the volume of post on the walks. We have no night sorters anymore so we have to sort to clear which could take up to an hour and a half!
Cheers, tinydancer x

This is exactly what RM want - they take out jobs and then are quite happy to let us do them for nothing (by either coming in early or not taking meal reliefs).
