Once that business transfers away from Royal Mail to other companies it will be lost forever and far from protecting jobs it will result in massive job losses.
I recall not too long ago a company tried to deliver mail in competition and failed and more recently KFC in a bid to save money hired DHL to resupply their shops and ended up having to suspend service to over 500 outlets for a period of time. My point being there isn't such a great chance of jobs being lost by the thousands.
The delivery of and tracking of parcels/packets has improved by leaps and bounds in recent years and although behind RM are catching up and with an infrastructure they have will certainly increase their market.
