LTB 254/20 - CWU/ROYAL MAIL JOINT STATEMENT - CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PAYMENT/FUTURE TALKS

Post by Woody Guthrie »

The payment will be made in June and will be on a pro rata basis for part time working, absence and unpaid leave
I suppose when you look at it, factor in the complete silence from both parties and the deliberately vague wording it would be easy to see the business coming out with what we actually meant was.

...will be on a pro rata basis (on hours worked) for part time working, (non-coronavirus related) absence and (non-coronavirus related) unpaid leave.

Or indeed for the union to claim they had won these concessions after an epic struggle.

Cue lots of fake cheers and backslapping....

If you've been fighting for your life on a ventilator, you aren't eligible for a company bonus? :arrrghhh

What if you had a fever and thought you'd stay off work to protect your colleagues? They get the bonus but you don't? :arrrghhh

What about if you've been savaged on delivery by a Rottweiler or another accident at work? :arrrghhh
Then you weren't physically at work, you didnt do the work.
There are many reasons why a company has to be careful when awarding any financial incentive for presenteeism. Especially if a worker was off work as a result of a disability under the equality act,for example.

I seem to remember Royal Mail giving it's workers the chance to win a car for not going sick but the problem with any incentives like this is that staff who are genuinely sick end up turning up for work when really they should have stayed at home. During a pandemic and following the governments advice to stay at home so as not to infect anyone else - I really don't understand how the company can not afford to reward all its staff.

There are some staff that did bugger all even though they worked through the crisis so from your argument should they get less bonus than someone who worked overtime every day??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
