you seem obsessed that it will work, and the only one to think it would, what's missing from the quotes is the other small bundle of mail in a bag as you said it's kept there, now if you have 75% terraced houses it will be a complete nightmare dipping into bag every 15 seconds, a 50 house terrace street that used to take 10mins with an extra 30 seconds indoor prep now takes 15mins, great efficiency saving.

If you have 85% sequencing, on a duty of 1000 items then 150 would be unsequenced.
Over 20 bundles of mail that equates to a about 8/bundle on average.
Dipping in to the bag every 15 seconds? The maths would say otherwise.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Very soon many walks are probably going to be lucky is they get 70-75% sequenced. With some potential changes coming up, on a really busy day you could potentially end up with half of it not being sequenced where there won't be the time to do it

I'm not sure. I guess they would either come in an A4 envelope altogether or there would be a strip of paper about four or five inches wide fastened around the width of the set of D2Ds. If it's done by hand rather than by machines then it will be a mind numbing job for some people that I wouldn't entertain applying for.

They trialled collated d2d a few years back and ours was one of the offices that had them. There was an A3 sheet of paper folded to A4 and the d2d were inside, so like an open book. The outer of the paper had something like "important information from Royal Mail" printed on it. It wasn't fastened in any way, just wrapped round with one side open. It made the bundles a bit bigger, it may not sound much but 2 extra thicknesses of A4 per house in a bundle of say 20 house's mail did make a difference.

Now I know that large flats are not being sequenced yet and nor are catalogues, but if they found a way or additional machines and staff that could do this, would it then not be possible to get this sequenced mail in one batch a bit later in the morning?? :hmmmm Its the only way I think a realistic SWW and less indoor time could work. There is still the issue of sorting through and marking the packets and these would need to arrive into delivery offices on the early vans.
The SWW was never guaranteed to happen partially or in its entirety and was always based on certain other conditions being met.
Some MCs are sorting flats down to individual walk level. I'm not sure if they are sequenced or in no particular order. The MC that services our DO is sorting/sequencing flats for some of the postcodes it covers but not ours yet although I have been told we eventually will be covered.
The delivery methods trials have been stopped short of their full term, were unsuccessful, and failed. This was due to 65% instead of 85% sequenced mail being delivered to some or all trial sites. There were other problems including overnight roadworks on motorways and difficulty in merging due to the small China Post packets we are continually plagued with. Check out the recent post from Dingo for the full details.

I did and its obvious to me why it doesn't work!! If the company can't guarantee that all the mail is going to arrive fully sequenced then what is the point of doing it?? In this sense, the trials were obviously going to be something of a non-starter. Don't touch the 1st wave then prep the loose bits of mail from buddy trays and walk sort frames and then merge into the 1st wave, well, you might as well put it all in the frame to start with! Maybe these D2D collating machines like you said will help us save a few precious minutes of indoor time.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

In a nutshell RM senior management got greedy and tried to trial something that we are about 10+ years away from when mail volumes will be much lower and packet numbers higher so making the merging of mail for a walk much easier and quicker because they'll be substantially less of it too merge. We all know the current mail volumes are still far higher than managers would have you believe, we see it on a daily basis, and with the continued rise in packets we are all struggling to do the job as it is in its current form. It was just another plan to make, hopefully, quick savings by getting less of us to do more because you can be sure they'd have been an increased delivery span coming along following any new delivery method release.

we always nest ours if there's 2 or more. managers actually give us time to collate them then prep into the frame. it would seem half of this company doesn't know what the other half is doing....arse from elbow so to speak

lets face it whoever comes up with these great and wonderful ideas are clueless what delivery staff do everyday and what the job entails on the street in all weathers , the company has just kept adding more and more work to the deliverys , increased parcels , 2d barcodes , tracked , collections , knocking on neighbours , new builds , they must think that we are all like sponges and would keep soaking this extra work up but even a sponge gives up in the end , we all knew there was no way these ideas would work and save any time on the indoor , I wonder what there next cunning plan will be :hmmmm

They were nested within the A3 wrapper, but not inside other d2d. They came in in trays, pre-collated.

honestly the job is a joke, absolutely zero is put into quality of service, in fact they are hell bent on making even more complaints to accumulate then moan how much it costs to deal with them blaming us, upheld or not,
i've been saying for years it can't get any worse but it does, fortunately it pays well enough compared to other unskilled work, that doesn't make it right to strip some of their well-being , which they do.
something has got to give, this time last year we had them on their knees, its got considerably worse since and despite several walk-outs of d/o our union bosses keep them isolated and deal with them individually where they need to be acting as a union, us all

Let's face it..
RM managers have been fiddling the figures for years, OK letters maybe dropping - but not as much as they would have you believe.
BUT packets and tracked items are rising year on year.
You only have to look at the traffic figures coming into your office to know this.
Anyone who works nights and does the sorting on the packets will back this up, there is a figure that red sleeves are supposed to contain, (around 190 -200), facts are if you have a red sleeve containing THE CHINESE PACKETS, then the figures in that red sleeve are going to be a lot more then they say.
I've sorted through plenty of red sleeves that contain THE CHINESE PACKETS and have counted 400+ plenty of times, this shows that the traffic is a lot more then RM quotes.
Until they come up with a proper way to count the packets, then RM are always going to fiddle the figures to suit their needs, which means more absorption on delivery or more job cuts.

How exactly do you acquire that knowledge if you have never done the duty before or perhaps never been in that part of town before?
I'll tell you.
You have dog warning stickers and dog warning cards. You then turn a letter and mark it "D" at the appropriate address or insert the dog warning card as a reminder to be extra vigilant at that address.
That is exactly the same way you ensure you don't miss D2D opt outs (except you don't mark the letter "D")
Your comment is based on the presumption that all details on the walk are up to date ,which I guarantee you in the office I work in they certainly aren't, no walk logs of any description to be found anywhere.
No dog warnings, no info on opt outs or special instructions of any kind on regularly lapsed walks , it's a shambles and it's certainly not alone in that.

Correct.
Naively I think I work for a FTSE top 100 company where professional managers are paid to do exactly that.
If they aren't then they need to be taken to task for failing to ensure the safety of their staff. It is a basic duty of care thing.
And along with them the reps for allowing such a shabby state of affairs to carry on unchallenged.
